Orleans Justice Center breach narrowly averted

NEW ORLEANS — A potential breach at the Orleans Justice Center was narrowly averted earlier this week when deputies found that dozens of screws had been removed from a secure metal gate in a recreation area. Multiple sources say a far more serious situation was avoided because only a few screws remained before the plate could have been removed, allowing inmates a clear path to escape. The plate, located on a first floor tier of the jail, appeared to have been tampered with over multiple days.

Ground-breaking use of technology secures conviction in triple murder

Two people died immediately: the intended target, 21-year-old Johnell Hampton, and his Uber driver, Andrew Stiller. Months later, Kimberly Hines, a woman who had been driving by when a stray bullet struck her in the head, was taken off life support. Moments after the triple killing, a driver in a passing car stopped and shot cell phone video of four gunmen running back to their getaway car. “It's senseless. Barbaric,” said Capt. Kevin Burns, New Orleans Police Department homicide commander.

NOPD loses direct access to Project NOLA cameras amid dispute

NEW ORLEANS — The already-strained relationship between the New Orleans Police Department and the city's largest private security camera operator just got worse. One of the first major crimes to be impacted was the quadruple shooting on Bourbon Street in the early morning hours on Sunday. An innocent 33-year-old bystander, one of three female victims, died of her wounds. Several images surrounding the shooting in the 200 block of Bourbon Street were published by the New Orleans Police Department.
