(KGNS) - Miguel Rangel is this month’s KGNS+ Honors recipient, recognized for his volunteer work with the 988 “You Are Not Alone” initiative, which focuses on mental health awareness and suicide prevention. Rangel has been seen at local intersections holding messages of hope, visiting schools and community events, and taking time to listen to those around him. Those who nominated him describe him as a trusted advocate for mental health awareness in the community.

(KGNS) - The city of Laredo and District Eight Council Member Alyssa Cigarroa hosted a ribbon cutting Monday for the Riverbend Park Nature Preserve, a new green space along the Rio Grande. The ceremony occurred from 9 to 10 a.m. at the 2700 block of Ventura Street. The preserve includes trails and scenic green space for walkers, cyclists, bird watchers and families.

LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - A local author will present her bilingual children’s book at a free public event in Downtown Laredo. Sandra Cavazos Ayala, author of Tina the Tortoise, is scheduled to appear at Casa Ortiz from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 27. The event is hosted by the Laredo Cultural District. Book inspired by library turtle Cavazos Ayala said the book originated at a poetry workshop she co-led with Dr. Patricia Gonzalez at a local library.
