PUTNAM COUNTY, W.Va. (WOWK) — An Army Corps of Engineers survey vessel was christened at the Winfield Locks and Dam on Monday, named after a Barboursville man who served for decades. Tom Plumley’s service to the Corps earned him the rare distinction of becoming the first living person in the Huntington district’s history to have a vessel named in his honor. He worked the nation’s inland waterways for decades and spent around two years helping rebuild the survey vessel that now bears his name.

MAN, W.Va. (WOWK) — 82 years after falling on the battlefield, a World War II hero from Man, West Virginia, has finally come home. He fought in the jungles of Burma with a legendary Army special operations unit, where he made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of his country. Corporal Kenneth E. Matson was escorted by military and police on Thursday from John Glen International Airport in Columbus, Ohio back to his hometown of Man, arriving at around 8:30 p.m. to cheering onlookers.
