**The following is adapted from remarks delivered to the Future of Democracy Forum in Vilnius on 7 November 2024, on the topic of why it is that democracies, with more economic and military might, hold back in the fight against autocracy. It seems like a particularly good week to talk about the future of democracy, near the end of a year of what feels by now like too many elections. And it is a good day to remember, really, that democracy is the greatest force ever to exist on the planet.

Many of my earliest memories take place in a single-fronted terrace house in Brunswick. The house was painted yellow. It had a dank wiry carpet throughout, and a toilet at the bottom of the backyard, which was paved with rupturing concrete. I lived there with my mum and older half-sister. We moved there after my parent’s divorce in 1990. Mum and Dad’s relationship was always very musical.

Circa 1999, I sat on the floor in a poorly lit house on the outskirts of Jakarta, still in my grey-and-white high-school uniform. The members of the protest punk band Anti-Military were plotting their first album recording in the next room. Scattered around me were political pamphlets, zines and books touching on the subjects of anarchism, anti-work and anti-racism.
