I've wanted to be a writer since reading Carolyn Keene's Nancy Drew series in the third grade. That dream took 30 years and a dramatic experience to become a reality. When our first son, Ben, was born with a rare genetic mutation, writing became a way for me to find support, share experiences and work through the emotions of raising a child with special needs.

He soon finds a partner, couples trade partners, and the odd person out picks up the broom while the band drives the tempo of a Doc Watson tune. Beneath the hall’s bright lights, the wood floor vibrates under the rhythm of boots, sandals, and sneakers sliding across the room. In the center of the rectangular hall stands the legendary square dance caller of Little Switzerland — Frank Brown.

For three years, Kelly and Tracey Dickson explored five North Carolina counties in search of the perfect piece of land to build a club offering sporting clay shooting, archery, hiking, biking and fly fishing. They gave presentations at city council meetings and knocked on farmers’ doors. Most people loved the project, but they didn’t want guns in their backyard.

It’s one of the artist’s 171 trolls across the globe, each made with recycled wood. “Little Sally’s” hair, a nod to the area’s furniture business, is made from chair leg samples from Wise Living, a custom furniture manufacturer in High Point.
