Lake Charles to build new disaster resilience hub

The Lake Charles City Council has voted to use disaster recovery funding to buy land in North Lake Charles as a location for a community resiliency hub. It would be the second one to be built and owned by the city, following a planned multimillion dollar indoor sports complex that is also designed to serve as a recovery staging ground following a disaster. The funds were originally designated for a city project in collaboration with Second Harvest Foodbank South Louisiana.

Gayle Road in Cameron, like many roads along the South Louisiana coast, is flanked by ditches and marshland. But where the road bends, looking toward the Calcasieu ship channel across the marshy landscape, construction cranes of the CP2 LNG liquefaction and export facility loom large. The company behind CP2, Venture Global LNG, requested the road be closed for two years as construction on the new terminal continues — prompting fierce opposition from the community.

But during the height of the lumber boom in the first half of the past century, the street, colloquially known as “Battle Row,” was bustling with saloons, gambling halls and other businesses catering to the mill and railroad workers who congregated there.
