COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS/Gray News) - The Columbia Police Department is investigating a shooting near a park on Hazelwood Road that took the lives of a suspect, an officer, and injured a second officer. According to police, the shooting resulted in the death of 29-year-old Chris DeLong. DeLong was hired by the department in 2024 and graduated from the Criminal Justice Academy in January 2025, when he was assigned to the Southeast region.

SAND SPRINGS, Okla. (KTUL) — A deadly explosion at a business complex in Sand Springs killed two people Thursday. The blast damaged at least 25 nearby businesses. Investigators say the explosion started inside a THC extraction facility. Sand Springs police and fire crews rushed to the Morrow Gill business complex around 1:30 a.m. The blast was so strong it blew out roofs, caved in walls and twisted heavy metal beams. Business owners are still waiting to see if anything inside is savable.

FLOWOOD, Miss. (WLBT/Gray News) - Authorities in Mississippi are investigating the death of a child who died despite lifesaving efforts at the hospital. Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey said deputies were called to the Alpine Mobile Home Park on Saturday for a 5-year-old who was not breathing. The child was taken to an area hospital, and CPR was started at the scene. However, the 5-year-old did not survive.

WASHINGTON PARK, Ill. (KMOV/Gray News) - Investigators say a pack of stray dogs attacked two people, killing one, in Illinois Thursday night. The attack happened in Washington Park. Resident Mike Tomlin saw the attack. “I heard the man screaming, and then I could hear dogs,” Tomlin said.

CINCINNATI (WXIX/Gray News) - An assistant principal for Cincinnati Public Schools is under arrest on a felony charge. According to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, Aiken New Tech High School assistant principal Steven Barton, 43, has been charged with sexual battery on a 16-year-old student. Investigators noted that there could also be more victims. Barton was booked into the Hamilton County Justice Center early Friday, and a judge later set his bond at $75,000.

CONWAY, S.C. (WMBF/Gray News) - A South Carolina man’s daughter says his caretaker had the deed to his home signed over to herself weeks before his death and never said anything about it. Nora Rowland says nurse Sarah Smalls began caring for her 75-year-old father, Robert, through Griswold Home Care in March 2024. However, Rowland, who lives in Maryland, said that shortly after her dad came under Smalls’ care, she began hearing less and less from him, which was highly unusual.

ORANGEBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC/Gray News) - The South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division has charged a now-former Orangeburg Public Safety Officer who stands accused of assaulting someone in his custody. Christopher James Tyler, 35, of Orangeburg, is charged with assault and battery in the second degree. The charges stem from a July 25 incident in which Tyler, while working as an officer for the Orangeburg Department of Public Safety, was taking the victim to jail for booking.
