Hello friends and readers, I’d started this newsletter during the pandemic to share my love of crime fiction (blood) & cocktails (whiskey). I still love both, though the whiskey loves me less these days. In early 2025 I put B&W on ice after taking a new job as publisher and executive director of Orion, a literary magazine focused on nature and the environment, climate and culture. My wife and I drove straight east from our Seattle home and are now living in New York’s Hudson Valley.

Hey friends and readers, I tried ten times to get this one out the door, but… the election, holidays, New Years, whatever. Now I’m sending this on my birthday. Vlautin is a spare and soulful writer who shines an empathetic light on lives we mostly prefer to overlook.
