Matthew Wale is the new prime minister of Solomon Islands after winning a vote in the Pacific island nation's parliament this morning. Mr Wale won a secret ballot of MPs, 26 to 22, over former foreign affairs minister Peter Shanel Agovaka after former prime minister Jeremiah Manele was removed in a no-confidence vote last week. Mr Wale, a long-time opposition leader who has been in parliament for two decades, was a vocal critic of the 2022 security pact Solomon Islands signed with China.

Solomon Islands is set to have a new leader next week, with Jeremiah Manele voted out as prime minister after a fiery debate in parliament that saw accusations of corruption and bribery. Mr Manele officially stepped away as leader this afternoon after a no-confidence vote was heard, with 26 MPs of the 50-seat parliament siding against him, triggering the end of his two-year reign. The new government bloc is yet to identify a new leader, with a vote expected sometime next week.

Fiji's prime minister says the country may soon enter a state of emergency, as the police and military combine for a highly visible crackdown on drug-related gang activity in the island nation. In a move that has triggered mixed responses in Fiji, military and police checkpoints have been set up around the country as the "joint taskforce" aims to put a dent in what it says is increased drug-related gang activity.
