Managed rainforests support higher carbon density and sequestration in the Congo Basin
Abstract Land-use is a key driver of forest loss and aboveground live carbon (AGC) emissions in the Congo Basin (CB) rainforest. Here we evaluate the influence of land-use disturbances on AGC stocks and fluxes by developing an AGC density map for the year 2020 and integrating it with high-resolution forest cover change data spanning 30 years (1990-2020) to quantify carbon emissions and removals.
Monitoring tropical forests with light drones: ensuring spatial and temporal consistency in stereophotogrammetric products
Abstract Light drones provide a cheap and effective tool to monitor forest canopy, especially in tropical and equatorial contexts, where infrastructure and resources are limiting. In these regions, good quality optical satellite images are rare, yet the stakes are maximal to characterize forest function, dynamics, diversity, and phenology, and more generally the vegetation-climate interplay.

Abstract Accurate mapping and monitoring of tropical forests aboveground biomass (AGB) is crucial to design effective carbon emission reduction strategies and improving our understanding of Earth’s carbon cycle. However, existing large-scale maps of tropical forest AGB generated through combinations of Earth Observation (EO) and forest inventory data show markedly divergent estimates, even after accounting for reported uncertainties.
