Nicole L.V. Mullis earned her MFA from Western Michigan University. Her plays have been produced across the United States. Her creative writing has appeared in magazines, anthologies, and newspapers. Her novel “A Teacher Named Faith” was published by Cairn Press. Her column work has been recognized by the Michigan Press and the Michigan Associated Press Media Editors.

Every home has a secret problem, something unsexy and foundational. It never reveals itself during the home inspection, but after you do something cute and cosmetic, like remodeling the kitchen or screening in the deck. Our current house took nearly a year to confess its secret. First, there was a vague stench near the back of the house, then a ripple in the paint by the corner, then an ice dam inside our patio doors. Still, we talked about fun things, like new windows.

My husband and I were invited to a Mardi Gras-themed fundraiser for a women’s shelter by his boss. There was food, a silent auction, a cash bar, and a rocking New Orleans band. The singer and the drummer were animated, winking and addressing the crowd. The bassist, pianist, and horn player were in their own worlds – eyes closed, fingers flying, not caring what was happening around them. People were eating or sitting or walking to the bar. The dance floor was criminally empty. I grew up dancing.

A metaphysical errand for a metaphorical gift

My husband’s birthday was coming up, and I wanted to surprise him with a small redbud tree. He asked for shorts. The older I get, the less satisfactory it is to buy someone shorts on their birthday. Milestones deserve metaphors, and trees are metaphors for blooming where one is planted. Since trees don’t do well in closets, I had to execute my plan on his birthday.
