No Room for Post-Millennialist Optimism: Considering the Saints and the City of Chaos in Isaiah 24–27
Christians today join the saints before them in searching the Bible to understand what exactly God promises us about the Last Days. No shortage of speculation exists, and it would be hard to overstate the impact eschatology has had on Christian life as believers navigate the spaces of politics and culture. As Christians long for the Second Coming of Christ, concern has centered around what this final appearance of Christ will look like.
When chaos and violence seem to rise faster and higher than the evening tide, we are invited to put our faith in a work that, though hidden, is still unfolding in our days, right in our midst. This is the surest and steadiest hope we can cling to in times of grief and disaster—namely, a work that assures us that evil won’t win; that, as profuse as the trouble is, God’s mercy is greater; that all this sorrow will one day “turn into joy”; that the darkness won’t overcome the light.

1. I’m building a dresser for my daughter. My approach to furniture is much different than filmmaking. When building a dresser or desk or what have you, I want everything to be very precise. I plan ahead, making drawings, being sure about the construction and measurements. I found a plywood distributor who will cut all the wood down to 1/16”. This makes all the difference, then all I need to do is assemble the pieces. 2. In contrast, when making a film, I long for accidents and surprises.
Unshakable Hope
For the bulk of Hebrews 12, the writer encourages his readers to persevere in faith and “run with endurance” by “looking to Jesus” (Heb. 12:1–2), even through seasons of trial and discipline (Heb. 12:7). Endurance under such circumstances would indeed be difficult, but there was grace and strength to be had in abundance in the consideration of the crucified Christ (Heb. 12:3).

In Luke 14, we are given one of the most intriguing and unique interactions in Jesus’s earthly career. We find our Lord reclining at a table surrounded by a coterie of religious elites and other high-ranking officials. While the prospect of Jesus sitting down to have dinner with a bunch of VIP Pharisees sounds more than a little abnormal, this is the third such occasion recorded in Luke.

One of the most heart-wrenching scenes in the entire Bible occurs in Genesis 45 when Joseph finally reveals his true identity to his brothers. As Moses records for us, “Then Joseph could not control himself before all those who stood by him. As the apostle Paul brings his letter to the Galatians to an end, he offers one final appeal to the gospel of Christ crucified in the midst of which he, likewise, reveals that these concluding words were written with his “own hand” (Gal. 6:11). This, of course, makes the Galatian epistle unique since it is probably the only biblical piece of writing that Paul wrote himself from start to finish.

There isn’t any historical context or background given that might let us know why the psalmist put pen to paper in Psalm 130. The only clue of any kind that occurs is the title: “A Song of Ascents” or “A Song of Degrees,” which is a title that appears in fifteen other Psalms as well (Ps. 120—134). Although the history behind these songs remains a mystery, most scholars theorize that Israelite worshippers used them as they ascended to Jerusalem proper during the festival days.

Son calls police after dad shot in the head in Downtown Atlanta
ATLANTA — Atlanta Police are investigating a scene where a man was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head. Officers responded to 13 Porter Place NE near West Peachtree for a shooting call around 9 p.m. Monday. According to Atlanta Police Lt. Andrea Webster, officers found a 46-year old man shot to death after the victim's son placed a 911 call. Police say the victim died as a result of his injuries. He has been identified as Rodrick Dejuan McBride.
Family finds woman dead in downtown Lawrenceville
Police are investigating a body found at a home located in downtown Lawrenceville. Lawrenceville Police were called to the 200 block of Stone Mountain Street around 3 p.m. Wednesday when family members discovered the 60-year old victim after stopping by to check on her. Atlanta Police recruit assaulted, robbed during early morning home invasion
ATLANTA — Atlanta Police are asking the public to take a look at the sketches of two men they believe were involved in a home invasion involving a police recruit. Police said the recruit began hearing noises around 2 a.m. on Sunday when he saw two men had entered the apartment through the bathroom window. One of the men began choking the recruit, but he was able to get away and call 911. The suspects were also able to get away with some of the recruit's belongings.
Warrant: Man drove from Alabama to Marietta to have sex with teen
COBB COUNTY, Ga. — An Alabama man has been charged with sexual exploitation of a child after allegedly arranging a meeting with a Cobb County teen over a social media app. According to a Cobb County warrant, Richard Parker planned to initiate a sexual relationship with a 13-year-old girl he met over the Meet24/fastmeet app. The warrant said the teen told Parker she was 13 years old and not 20, as the app stated. Parker told the teen he was OK with her age and that he "liked little girls".
Man posed as teen boy, picked 14-year-old up from Cobb County high school, police say
COBB COUNTY, Ga. — An Acworth man was arrested after he pretended to be a 16-year-old teenage boy and initiating a 5-month-long online relationship with another teen. Billy Calhoun was arrested and charged with sexual exploitation of a child and interference with custody after police said he picked up the teen from school without her parent's consent. According to authorities, Calhoun pretended to be a teen named Zachary and set up social media profiles in order to converse with another teen.
Acworth man accused of having sex with teen over two-year span, police say
MARIETTA, Ga. — An Acworth man is behind bars after police say he sexually assaulted a teen over the course of two years. A Cobb County warrant shows that 26-year-old Jacob Majors had sex with a teenager multiple times between June 2017 and September 2019. According to the warrant, the victim states Majors began the assaults at a Kennesaw home when they were 13 years old. There is no information on the relationship between Majors and the teen.
Homeowner shoots man after breaking into Milton home, police say
CRIME The man was identified as Corey Patton II from Charlotte, North Carolina. MILTON, Ga. — One man is dead after police said a homeowner shot an alleged burglar breaking into his home in North Fulton County. Milton Police received a call around 8:40 p.m. Saturday about a reported burglary at a home on New Providence Road. Police say a man broke into a locked front door at the residence, where he was confronted by the homeowner. The homeowner shot the suspect multiple times, according to police.
Mattie's Call: Deputies searching for missing 84-year-old woman
SPALDING COUNTY, Ga. — A Mattie's Call has been activated for an elderly woman who hasn't spoken to her family since Monday. Spalding County Sheriff's Office said 84-year-old Willie Jo Greer last talked to family around 5:30 that evening. She was last seen driving a 2009 dark green Kia Ronda. Greer is about 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighs around 150 pounds. She has grey hair and brown eyes. Investigators did not have any information on what she was wearing. Greer has been diagnosed with dementia.

ATLANTA — Atlanta Police are asking for the public's assistance to find a woman missing for the last month. Police say 23-year-old woman Ta'Keysha Zachary's grandparents dropped her off at an abandoned Shell gas station on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive on January 26. Her grandparents said they normally drop her off in that area, where she would then walk to a friend's house nearby or take the MARTA train.
Teen last seen in Oconee County neighborhood still missing
OCONEE COUNTY, Ga. — The Oconee County Sheriff's Office is on the lookout for a missing 17-year-old girl. The sheriff's office said on Saturday Julia Mann was last seen off Rocky Branch Road in the Rowan Oak Subdivision but had few details on the circumstances of her disappearance, whether they consider it suspicious or if they believe Mann left on her own. By Sunday afternoon, they reissued their alert telling the public that they are still looking for the 17-year-old.
Newnan hotel room bodies discovered by Quality Inn staff
NEWNAN, Ga. — Newnan Police are trying to figure out what led to the deaths of two people discovered in a hotel room on Wednesday. Police say the bodies were found by hotel staff at the Quality Inn on Lakeside Way in Newnan that morning. Investigators arrived to find a man and woman dead in their room. Police do not know when the two died and investigators haven't determined the cause of death for either. But they said there weren't any signs of "felonious assault" noticed at the scene.
'Major' I-20 accident shuts down westbound lanes in Rockdale County
CONYERS, Ga. — A crash on I-20 near State Road 138 in Conyers has all westbound lanes blocked. Investigators are still on scene trying to figure out what caused the incident near state road 20. The Georgia Department of Transportation reports that six cars were involved in the accident. It's unclear at this point if there were any injuries or deaths as a result of the crash. For now, drivers are encouraged to find alternate routes as the investigation continues. This is a developing story.
DeKalb accident leaves teen dead on South Hairston Drive
DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — DeKalb County Police are currently investigating a deadly crash after a teen driver ran into a telephone pole. Police were called to the 2300 block of South Hairston Drive near Wesley Chapel Road to investigate a crash into a telephone pole. Investigators determined it was a single-vehicle accident. The driver of that vehicle was pronounced dead on the scene. No other injuries were reported.
Surveillance photos catch joyrider doing donuts in field, causing thousands in damage
MILTON, Ga. — Milton police are asking the public to assist in a case about donuts - and not the sweet kind. New photos released from a Feb. 8 incident show a vehicle taking to a field next to Northwestern Middle School to turn donuts. Police say someone recorded the stunt as the vehicle drove in the fresh snow. Police estimate the damage could cost "thousands" in repairs. The vehicle is described as a newer model black Jeep Renegade with a plastic bag or cover over the license plate.
Union City shooting stemmed from attempted car theft, police say
UNION CITY, Ga. — Union City police are still trying to figure out exactly what led to a shooting near a strip mall on Jonesboro Road. Police were called to the 4600 block of Jonesboro Road around 7 p.m. Saturday night. Investigators arrived to find a man shot in the leg. Further investigation showed the person was shot during an attempted carjacking. Police have not said if the person shot was the car owner or the attempted carjacker. The man was taken to a local hospital to be checked out.

ATLANTA — The Atlanta City Council passed legislation to create the Office of Inspector General, the latest move by the Bottoms administration to provide an open and transparent government. The Atlanta City Council voted unanimously to amend the city's Charter and create the office. The position was introduced earlier this year after a recommendation made by the Mayor's Task Force for the Promotion of Public Trust.
Conyers accident on I-20 blocks eastbound lanes
ROCKDALE COUNTY, Ga. — Drivers in Rockdale County will need to find an alternate route as investigators try to figure out what caused a major crash on I-20 near Georgia Route 20. The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) reports all eastbound lanes are currently blocked on I-20 just before the SR 20/138 exit. Investigators have not released any details on the accident. GDOT cameras were not available to see exactly how many vehicles were involved.
Police: Victim set up meeting to sell iPhone, but was robbed instead
ATLANTA — Atlanta Police is asking the public's help to identify an armed robbery suspect caught on surveillance video. The robbery took place on Christmas Eve outside a gas station in the 3200 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. The victim told police he had set up a meeting through an app to sell his iPhone 11. Surveillance video captured the suspect after she told the victim she needed to run inside the store and get cash from the ATM.
Buford house fire claimes life of family dog
LOCAL Investigators believe the home is a total loss. BUFORD, Ga. — Gwinnett County Fire Investigators are still trying to learn what ignited a fire inside a Buford home late Friday night. Firefighters were called to the 300 block of Moreno Street NE just after 11 p.m., Friday after a caller reported smoke and flames coming from windows in the back of the home. Crews arrived to find a one-story home with fire and smoke pluming from windows on all sides of the home.
Man dies after shooting at apartment complex in west Atlanta
ATLANTA — Atlanta Police are trying to figure out what led to a deadly shooting at a northwest Atlanta apartment complex Friday night. Officers were called to 62 Harwell Ct. around 8:15 p.m. on reports of a person shot. Investigators arrived to find a 29-year-old man with a gunshot wound lying in the driveway. The victim was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital but ultimately died from his injuries.

Deputies searching for missing Gainesville teen
GAINESVILLE, Ga. — The Hall County Sheriff's Office is asking the public to be on the lookout for a Gainesville teen who has been missing since Wednesday. Deputies say 15-year-old Conner Davis ran away from his home on Springdale Forest Circle on October 30. Family told authorities Conner has been acting "abnormally" and they are concerned for his safety. Davis is 5'8 and weighs around 140 pounds with brown hair and hazel eyes.
