If, and how, to group by ‘ability’ - considerations about class group formation
ABSTRACT Many schools choose to organise students into classes according to their perceived “ability”, despite evidence that the practice is not beneficial for students, overall. Class grouping by “ability” can exacerbate existing social inequalities by segregating students according to pre-existing educational advantage, which has unjustifiable consequences from a social justice perspective.
Rigidity of class ability grouping practices in Australia
ABSTRACT Inequity in education is pronounced when data is used to form rigid class ability groups. Rigid grouping means that students with backgrounds that disadvantage them in education can be locked into low ‘ability’ class groups. In contrast, informed and flexible use of data can support adaptable and heterogeneous ability grouping, which better accommodates the diverse needs and potentials of students.

Government officials have been placed on notice by the U.S. Supreme Court concerning undue impact fees. Before this most recent court ruling, if you wanted to build your family home, there was the possibility that impact mitigation fees could require you to pay thousands of dollars to local governments for the mere privilege of acquiring the proper permit. This fee was a preset figure by the legislature who believed they were exempt from proving the fees they were charging were reasonable.

‘Is this really fair?’ How high school students feel about being streamed into different classes based on ‘ability’
School news / ‘It's problematic’: MP's educational resources for schools attract criticism A federal MP’s attempt to offer primary schools times tables charts that come emblazoned with his name, photo and electorate office details have been slammed as “problematic” and “a bit bizarre” by a political scientist and former school leader.
'Is this really fair?' How high school students feel about being streamed into different classes based on 'ability'
Many Australian schools still use “streaming”, where students are separated into classes based on ability. However, not all students see streaming as beneficial. My research, published in the journal Research Papers in Education, found streaming caused some students to feel unduly pressured, privileged, disempowered, and misunderstood.

Beth Hart Puts on Mesmerising Performance at City Hall in Sheffield [Photos & Show Review]
There are some shows where the performer leaves the audience completely hypnotized and this was one of those shows. The performer in question was Los Angeles singer-songwriter Beth Hart. In town supporting her War In My Mind album, the ninth of her solo career, Hart was in Sheffield on the third to last date of a UK run that has seen her battle illness and huge storms battering the country.
Masked Country Star ORVILLE PECK Mesmerizes Fans at Leeds Irish Centre [Photos]
This is Orville Peck’s first tour of Europe and, as such, there are sold-out signs appearing outside venues across the UK including Leeds where a quick shift in venue takes a room full of fans to the Irish Centre from the original location at the Brudenell. A few hundred fans cram into the Irish Centre, with plenty more left disappointed, as Peck takes to the stage with minimal fuss.
THE STRUTS Kick Off their UK Headline Tour with a Kick Ass Show at Manchester Academy [Photos & Show Review]
Band Links: Such has been their incredible rise, it was barely six months ago that hard rockers The Struts were packing out the Academy 2, one of the smaller accompanying venues to tonight's date where the band kick off their latest Autumn UK run in support of 2018's Young & Dangerous which, coincidentally, dropped almost a year ago to the day.
Electronic Rock Icon GARY NUMAN's (R)Evolution Shows No Signs of Slowing Down in Leeds [Photos & Show Review]
Band Links: Electronic rock icon Gary Numan has been doing this for forty years now. Yes, just take that in, forty years and, as has been the same across the UK on this celebration run, the man is showing he is still at the top of the game and the electronic rock league. It's Saturday night in Leeds when we catch this run of date packing ourselves into the O2 Academy in Leeds with a thousand or so hardcore fans for a career-spanning set.

Inglorious Rock Out with their Hardcore Fans at Manchester Academy 2 [Show Review]
Inglorious’ Ride to Nowhere tour is the band's first outing with the new line-up featuring guitarists Danny Dela Cruz and Dan Stevens and Vinnie Colla on bass. We joined them at Manchester Academy 2 to around 400 fans, a welcome sight which would have allayed some concerns about Inglorious’ future success.
Don Broco @ O2 Victoria Warehouse (Manchester, UK) on February 2, 2019 [Photos + Show Review]
Band Links: Arriving at O2 Victoria Warehouse in Manchester for the second of two sold-out shows to kick off Don Broco’s UK tour this was also a year to the day since the release of their album Technology. The warehouse was vast, and my first impression of this venue was it’s too cavernous to create a good atmosphere for a live show. I couldn't have been more wrong with the 4,200 capacity who filled every space here dancing from front to back the entire evening, including on the balcony.

Church in Leeds has to be one of the coolest looking venues around. Quite literally inside an old church, the vaulted ceiling, arches, balcony and indoor tree make it a noteworthy place to be. Thehad a whopping four band line up and I arrived in time to catchfrom Ohio. The stand out tracks of the set were the penultimate and final songs, "Feel Nothing" and "Disposable FX" both from their latest album Dispose.

Stone Free Festival @ The O2 (London, UK) on June 17, 2018 [Photos + Show Review]
I was amazed arriving on Sunday atat the London O2 to find a parking space almost as close as possible to the venue - it’s never normally that easy. Walking the approach to The O2 also felt unusually quiet, and after speaking to a few stewards, they were expecting much smaller crowds than the Saturday, and anticipating most people would be arriving later and heading straight into the main arena.Sunday was an amazing mix of blues, rock and roll and prog-rock.
Lenny Kravitz (w/Curtis Harding) @ O2 Apollo (Manchester, UK) on June 19, 2018 [Photos & Show Review]
A warm summer’s eve, chatter bubbling through the queue outside Manchester'sand the side street packed with tour buses; it was the perfect, exciting start to an evening with. The sloping venue floor was surprisingly empty when I arrived - I did wonder whetherplaying across town may have poached most of Kravitz’s fans, I was later proved very wrong.Support actspent his set awash with blue light, contributing to the mellow style of his playing.

is a world of its own. The approach is a very industrial view of Birmingham but, step inside, and you are transported to Cuba; colourful wooden facades covering the walls, festoon lighting and palms covering most surfaces. However, on this cold March evening I was there to be plunged into the depths of California and Melbourne’s hardcore scene. Of the mammoth 5 band line-up, I arrived for third support.
