Interior of a London Coffee-house. Anonymous. c. 1650-1750 Readers, we have a guest post this week and will adjust our upcoming reading schedule accordingly. First, I thought this essay on hosting a book club was a perfect follow-up to my post last week about living more art-full-y. Second, I accepted a last-minute writing assignment last week with a quick turnaround time. So, this gives me a little bit more breathing room before we jump into our readings of Jonathan Swift.

FacebookXTruthGettrLinkedInTelegram 7/24/2025Updated: 7/24/2025 Nonfiction This week, we feature a work of dual biographies set during the Golden Age of Baseball and an overview of the silent standards upholding society.By Os Guinness A civilization reaches a critical point when it loses or abandons its original dynamic of inspiration. Unless these bonds to the past can be reforged, that culture enters into a decline and eventually falls.
Re-Open the Windows: The Challenge of the Secular in Our Generation
The apostle Paul gave King David the highest tribute when he described him as a man after God’s own heart and as one who “served the purpose of God in his own generation” (Acts 13:22, 36). Can we, as followers of Jesus, rise to such a challenge today in one of the most momentous generations in history? We live in “a civilizational moment,” a period when a civilization loses touch with the foundation and inspiration on which it was built.

Virtue, DD March 13, 2025 The world is fast approaching the climax of one of the great turning points in history, writes Os Guinness, a leading American social critic and committed Anglican Christian. After nearly two millennia of existence and half a millennium of unprecedented dominance, Western civilization is on the wane and the shadows it casts are lengthening, he writes.
Does the Bible Support Religious Freedom?
The ability to practice one’s faith openly and without fear of persecution or government interference is a freedom many Christians have enjoyed over the years. Unfortunately, this kind of religious freedom is historically rare. It is also denied to millions of Christ’s followers around the world even today. But how important is religious freedom to a free society? Is religious liberty essential to the success and survival of the church?

Shifts in Culture, the Church, and Ideology
One author has poignantly written “we’re not in an age of change, but a change of age.” John and Maria discuss that idea as it relates to culture, the church, and ideology in general.

Signals of Transcendence - Key Life
by Os Guinness The question to ask is how we have each responded to signals—especially when the censors and the scoffers form so loud a chorus and a cordon around us. What do such signals mean? Are they only a will-o’-the- wisp, leading honest seekers astray into the darkness and the bogs of illusion? Are they only a false dawn that ushers in a day no different and no better than today? Or are they signals pointing to solutions that are solid and to satisfactions that are a delight?
To Stay or Go? That Is the Question
Have you ever had a MONDAY where you just wanted to give up? If you are honest, we all have had those days. You have prepared for the service and preached the gospel faithfully to the people that attended on Sunday, but Monday comes, and you fall victim to the emptiness of the service less than 24 hours before. Questions begin to swirl in your mind, where are the people? Am I the problem? Is there a way out for me and the church? Should I stay or go? Do the people even like my family and me?

Zero Hour America - Key Life
by Os Guinness Even now when events in America are so often disheartening and at times angering, I remain confident that there are still Americans who will not give up on their great experiment in freedom, citizens for whom the cause of freedom remains unquenchable in their hearts, and leaders who know that the cause of freedom is moral, responsible, collective, and anything but selfish. Are there enough of such Americans? Are there leaders who will give them a voice?

Os Guinness on The Future of Freedom
Are human beings born innocent or corrupt? Do we have the ability to create a perfect world, or is that impossible? Those drawing on Enlightenment assumptions assert that man is born pure, and that corruption comes through outside forces. In this view, utopia becomes achievable to the extent that we eliminate all sources of corruption. But rather than ushering in heaven on earth, this outlook actually has a long track record of creating totalitarian dystopias.

Radical left wants to undermine the traditions of an 'ordered' freedom in American society
ANALYSIS/OPINION: The apoplectic rage that broke out at the confirmation of Justice Amy Coney Barrett was highly revealing, and no American should miss the warning sign. It had little to do with the new Justice, only a little more to do with her promoters, and everything to do with her critics’ views of the American republic. Press responses were bad enough, with talk of America’s “anti-democratic Constitution” and “the end of democracy.” The political response was worse.
Reconciliation or revenge in a divided America?
ANALYSIS/OPINION: “When this nightmare is over,” Former Labor Secretary Robert Reich says, “we need a Truth & Reconciliation Commission. It would erase Trump’s lies, comfort those who have been harmed by his hatefulness, and name every official, politician, executive and media mogul whose greed and cowardice enabled this catastrophe.” For those who love freedom and those who prize truth and reconciliation, the tone of Mr. Reich’s proposal sends shudders down the spine.
Can America Stay Free?
In light of the presidential election, it’s important to ask ourselves what our national identity is beyond the partisan squabbling, the front-yard election signs and the campaign ads. In other words, we need to ask ourselves: What makes America great? There are any number of answers to that question: the strength of America’s GDP, the power of its military, the prestige of its universities, the breadth of its infrastructure. But many would answer with none of those things.
As leftists threaten to burn down the republic forever, where are America's voices of freedom?
ANALYSIS/OPINION: “AOC,” the celebrated leader of the “Squad,” recently urged her supporters to send a message to Sen. Mitch McConnell: “We need to tell him that he is playing with fire.” That was considerable cheek. The senator was seeking to fulfil his constitutional duty, and she is a recognized firebrand. Along with many in her party she has supported those who have literally set the country ablaze this summer. But the effrontery runs deeper.
Review: ‘The Dust of Death: The Sixties Counterculture and How It Changed America Forever’ by Os Guinness
To many people today, the 1960s are ancient history, and neither history nor the past registers strongly with the present-obsessed myopia of our time. Yet the past is always the key to the present. And no one can understand the present crisis in the United States and the West without understanding the ’60s. Western civilization is in decline, and its lead society, the American republic, is as deeply divided as at any time since just before the Civil War. But why?
By not answering questions about packing the court, Biden and Harris raise the reddest of red flags
ANALYSIS/OPINION: James Madison must have looked down on last week’s electioneering with dismay. When former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Kamala Harris both repeatedly refused to answer questions about packing the U.S. Supreme Court, they raised the reddest of red flags and — should they win — they sounded the death knell of the Founders’ Republic. The Supreme Court is not only the third branch of government, it is an indispensable part of America’s separation of powers.
Harper's letter against 'cancel culture' is welcome and overdue
ANALYSIS/OPINION: On July 7, Harper’s magazine published a powerful “Letter on Justice and Open Debate” signed by 153 prominent authors, artists and intellectuals. After an obligatory shot at President Trump, the letter makes the case against the growing censorship known as “cancel culture.” A key sentence: “The free exchange of information and ideas, the lifeblood of a liberal society, is daily becoming more constricted.” The Harper’s letter is welcome and surely overdue.
“The Roots of the Present Crisis”
Os Guinness: “The Roots of the Present Crisis” How did truth and love come to be seen as opposed? One of the great cultural commentators of our generation, Os Guinness, explains how a 200 year-old disagreement laid the groundwork for huge changes in how we live—and how chaos has grown from that rift.

1776 vs. 1789
Os Guinness for decades has spoken and written articulately. He brings to bear honed discernment in noting, “The present obsession with President Trump, whether supporting or opposing him, is a massively distorting factor for a simple reason: Donald Trump is the consequence of the crisis and not the cause. … The crisis created the president.
What's needed now is a comprehensive restoration and renewal of the Republic
ANALYSIS/OPINION: Can America survive Americans? The American experiment is history’s longest-running tutorial in the art of political freedom, but is it coming to an inglorious end — and at the hand of Americans? With American public life sinking into conflict and squalor by the day, allow a visitor and an admirer to put in a word.

Christian scholar cites global religious issues
WASHINGTON (AP) — A Christian scholar says the world’s future will hinge on how three religious questions are answered. Author Os Guinness, founder of the Trinity Forum, took part in a panel Tuesday at the National Press Club in Washington. He said the first question is whether Islam will modernize peacefully. The second is “which faith or ideology” will ultimately replace communism in China, and the third is whether Western civilization will return to its roots.
Os Guinness: Welcome to the 'Grand Age of Apologetics'
In the late 1960s, Os Guinness worked alongside Francis Schaeffer at L’Abri, Schaeffer’s famed Christian retreat center in Switzerland. In the 1980s, he moved to the United States, where he served (among other places) at the Woodrow Wilson Center and the Brookings Institution. He has been heavily involved in discussions about the First Amendment and the need for a vigorous, civil public square.
Grand Central Question
Essential to a Witness' Apology to Muslims All serious Christians need to read or listen to this book. From the perspective of a former Muslim, this is a powerful testimony for Christ Jesus. Not only that, but it gives a look inside a culture which is absolutely against Christian and Jew alike. But, it is possible to show these people that Jesus the Christ, Messiah the King is not who and what they teach. And, they confirm this with their own texts. I listened through this in two days.
