I went to El Salvador to see if the country really gave up on Bitcoin Original
In late August, I had the pleasure of visiting El Salvador for the first time. I didn’t know what to expect. The bar had been set high by both conservative and liberal media, who either praised or decried President Nayib Bukele’s vigorous war on crime. Within a few hours of arrival, I saw the media reports were true. El Salvador, once a violent, gang-ridden nightmare, was now a place of peace. Much has been written about Bukele’s crackdown — understandably so, given the success of his efforts.

I Use AI This Way To Earn $52 Daily - You Can Too
How I Made Tech Work for Me No fancy tech skills needed — this is just how I use AI in my daily routine to make some extra cash. So, I wasn’t planning on making money with AI. It just sorta happened. I used to think AI was only for techy people or coders sitting in a basement eating Doritos and building robots. Note: I want you to stop before you read more! Now, let me ask you something! Have you always been looking out for the easy ways to earn money? Well, I have found some easy ideas for you.
Heroic Romanticism
When I speak with the college students in my philosophy of love courses about relationships, what I hear again and again is fear. Fear of dating, fear of commitment, fear of vulnerability, fear of anything costly and irrevocable. Casual hookups and situationships abound, and young people are regularly warned against “catching feelings.” And it’s not just Gen Z. The number of U.S. adults shying away from and marriage has been hovering around record highs. I can sympathize.
James Lindsay Is Wrong About Wokeness
Self-styled classical liberal and sworn enemy of Christian nationalism James Lindsay published a piece in the American Reformer last week titled “The Liberal Consensus and the New Christian Right.” In the piece, Lindsay inserted heavily edited selections from Karl Marx’s Communist Manifesto in an attempt to score points on the kind people at the conservative Protestant publication and to bolster his argument that a certain subset of the right has become just as “woke” as the left.

Trump has made it clear that he would like to enact sweeping changes to education, and it’s evident that this will include a sustained attack on diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.

On a recent episode of the New York Times’ podcast “The Daily,” host Michael Barbaro accompanied a Kamala Harris campaign worker as he knocked on the doors of undecided voters in Wisconsin. Those who answered the door expressed a broad range of opinions, yet most remained skeptical of both candidates.

Anastasiia Makarevich/iStock/Getty Images Plus Over the past few months, I have had conversations with colleagues at multiple institutions of higher education who have reported the reluctance of universities to enforce norms—whether penalizing plagiarism and AI-generated work, putting away phones in educational settings, employing appropriate etiquette in communication, or meeting deadlines.

The reeducation of DEI (opinion)
You have /5 articles left. Sign up for a free account or log in. Dzmitry Dzemidovich/iStock/Getty Images Plus There’s no denying that DEI is in trouble. “DEI” (an acronym meaning “diversity, equity and inclusion,” though sometimes with variations including “justice” and/or “belonging”), and the offices and committees associated with it, are under mounting pressure from both outside and inside universities.
What is ‘lived experience’? - Patrick J Casey
Everywhere you turn, there is talk of lived experience. But there is little consensus about what the phrase ‘lived experience’ means, where it came from, and whether it has any value. Although long used by academics, it has become ubiquitous, leaping out of the ivory tower and showing up in activism, government, consulting, as well as popular culture.

Lived Experience: Defined and Critiqued
ABSTRACT From social media to the halls of academia all the way to the White House, everyone is talking about “lived experience”. Yet, there is considerable confusion about what, precisely, the term means. Part of this confusion results from the lack of awareness about the origin of the term and the philosophical need that it was introduced to address.
‘Empire of Light’ with Olivia Colman is an ode to movies
From its first moments, in which an employee played by Olivia Colman opens the grand, golden Empire cinema for the day, "Empire of Light" feels like a love letter to the experience of moviegoing. Although Colman's Hilary never actually has time to watch movies, "Empire" is filled with the kinds of things designed to make a cinephile's heart race.
Four Questions Concerning Future Naval Systems and Fleet Architecture
The U.S. military understands it is already engaged in ongoing “peacetime” cyber conflict against state and nonstate opponents intending to harm the United States and its allies and partners. Various motives drive this conflict, and it takes many different forms, ranging from espionage and theft of intellectual property to what are effectively cyber privateering and piracy.

Are Science and Religion Locked in a Zero-Sum Struggle?
It's “common knowledge” that science and religion are locked in perpetual conflict. After all, didn't people, informed by their religion, believe that the Earth was flat well into the Middle Ages or even later? Wasn't Copernicus hounded by Christians for demoting the Earth from its privileged place at the center of the cosmos? Didn't the Church torture Galileo for defending heliocentrism? As it happens, none of these stories are accurate. Read Full Article » Show comments Hide Comments

A Credible Deterrent to Chinese Cyber Attacks
With the use of cyber weapons of various kinds, the world seems to be in a new kind of strategic era. For the first time in many decades, there are strategic weapons that can be used without destroying the world. Low-level cyber warfare seems to go on constantly. It is almost always strategic, in the sense that it touches places anywhere in the world. It generally seems much less destructive than any nuclear weapon.
To Master the Cyber Threat, Naval Intelligence Should Remember Its Undersea Domain Roots
Over the past two decades, U.S. global naval superiority has been progressively eroded by Russian and Chinese technological advancements in speed, range, stealth, and sheer tonnage.
Groups Are Not Monoliths
For anyone who pays attention to the news, it’s hard to go a day without hearing about how difficult it’s become to engage in productive dialogue with others across ideological boundaries. The lament may be bordering on cliché, but it also happens to be true. We are living through an intense period of polarization, which encourages us to interpret disagreements as taking place between two groups, each of cartoonish simplicity: “us” (the right thinking) and “them” (the wrong thinking).
The Navy Needs a Real Cyber Warfare Community
In his forward to the U.S. Tenth Fleet’s Strategic Plan 2020-2025, Vice Admiral T. J. White stated that he is “certain the opening rounds of a 21st-century great power conflict, particularly one impacting the maritime domain, will be launched in the electromagnetic, space, or cyber domains.” The Navy currently relies on a small team of experts to extend its grasp into this new realm of armed conflict. This is not the right approach.

Sonic The Hedgehog
By Alan Ng | February 23, 2020 Next up in the elusive search for a great video game movie comes Sega’s entrant Sonic the Hedgehog. Based on the video game, which I’ve never played, is the fast-running, fast-talking cute-as-a-button blue hedgehog, Sonic (Ben Schwartz). What I do know from the game is a world where there’s a lot of running tracks and gold rings. Opening with a thankfully short intro of Sonic’s world, our furry friend is a one-of-a-kind alien of some sort.

The Coup D’état of Conservatism Inc. and TPUSA
Published November 2, 2019 Since the 2016 election, the Right has suffered a marked decline in morale and enthusiasm. Trump failed to deliver the sweeping reforms for which we so hoped; the Alt-Right, initially new and intriguing, gradually devolved into crude neo-Nazism; Charlottesville scared most people away from real world organizing; an escalating climate of censorship and deplatforming diminished our ability to communicate and fundraise.
Opinion: See ya around!
By Patrick Casey, Graphic Designer May 7, 2019 During summer 2017, I needed to start looking for a job. Without help from the college, I wouldn’t have stepped foot into The Chronicle—my first graphic design job. I thought, “Me working for the newspaper? Of all places.” I felt so lucky to be part of something extremely exciting. I’ve gotten to learn so much from this job that now I’m more confident with myself and my work.

EDITORIAL: Banning cigarettes is not a solution; dismantling power structures is
Hawaiian lawmakers introduced a bill raising the legal minimum age to purchase cigarettes. It would go from its current 21 to 30 in 2020, to 40 in 2021, to 50 in 2022, to 60 in 2023, and, finally, to 100 in 2024, effectively banning smoking on the islands. Nationwide, there is a growing push to raise the minimum age to purchase tobacco to 21. Already, six states and about 350 cities, including Chicago, have raised the tobacco purchase age to 21.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z are holding a contest in whichfans could win free concert tickets for life for going vegan. Fans don’t have to go completely vegan immediately; they can also limit their meat consumption. The challenge is a part of The Greenprint Project, which seeks to help the environment by encouraging people to undertake plant-based diets. As celebrities, Beyoncé and Jay-Z have every right to hold a contest where they give away their own concert tickets.

Starbucks has agreed to install needle disposal boxes in “high-risk” bathrooms after more than 3,700 employees signed a petition requesting the action, according to a Jan. 10 USA Today article. The company is on the right track. In May, Starbucks enacted an open-bathroom policy, and workers have since complained of finding discarded needles and syringes in bathrooms.
Blue Christmas: How to provide support for those affected by the holidays
The holidays are here. Christmas lights have sprung up on every street and State Street is flooded with shoppers. While some people may see this as “the most wonderful time of the year,” not everyone feels this way. For many, the holidays are an especially painful time, and it’s important we recognize and offer support to those affected in the coming weeks. For people who have lost loved ones, the holidays can serve as a painful reminder of someone who is not with you anymore.
Fans hope for playoffs after hot start to Bears season
The Chicago Bears have brought that winning feeling back to Soldier Field. Twelve games into the 2018 NFL season, the team has a winning record against divisional opponents and took a five game winning streak into Sunday’s game with the Giants. South Chicago Heights native and loyal fan DeAndre Hooks said he is impressed with what the Bears have accomplished on defense and offense. “The turning point was when they [traded for] Khalil Mack. That was the final piece of the puzzle,” Hooks said.
