Currently: contributing writer at Commonweal magazine and freelancer for other outlets, including The Daily Beast. Author of "The Saint and the Sultan: The Crusades, Islam and Francis of Assisi's Mission of Peace" (Doubleday, 2009) and "An Unlikely Union: The Love-Hate Story of New York's Irish and Italians" (NYU Press, 2015).

The writer Jay Neugeboren recalls that as a boy growing up in postwar Brooklyn, “the two great passions of my life were playing ball and reading novels.” Based on his new collection of essays, I can imagine that if he’d succeeded in making a career of sports, he’d have been a “ballplayer’s ballplayer,” a player other players respect for hard work, unflagging professionalism, a steadily high level of competence, and even brilliance.

John M., a Romanian man from Flushing, Queens, was recovering from cardiac bypass surgery last July when he was unexpectedly detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents who were looking for his ex-girlfriend. ICE sought to deport him, but couldn’t send him to his native Romania: In 2020, an immigration judge had denied asylum to John M. but granted him withholding from removal to his homeland based on evidence that he would likely be persecuted there.

The Gospel according to Tom Homan begins with the story of a five-year-old boy who was the first among nineteen migrants to die of extreme heat in the cargo bed of a truck that transported them across the Mexican border in 2003. Homan, the senior White House staffer dubbed the nation’s “border czar,” tells the story well, and often. Its power is in the details: the little boy dead in his yellow underpants, his other clothing removed in the suffocating heat.
