The Voyager space mission
In 1977, two similar spacecraft were launched from Cape Canaveral, in Florida. These were called Voyager 1 and Voyager 2. Voyager 2 was launched first, on 20 August, and Voyager 1 was launched a couple of weeks later, on 5 September. Their primary mission was to explore Jupiter and Saturn. Because they were working so well, after their primary mission was completed, Voyager 2 was sent on to explore Uranus and Neptune. It is still the only craft to have visited those outer planets.
The study into ‘screws versus cons’
The name Philip Zimbardo may not mean a lot to most people, but if I say ‘the Stanford Prison Experiment’ then you may start to know who I mean. Born in 1933, Zimbardo died in October last year. He was a psychologist and professor at Stanford University in the USA. In 1971 he set up an experiment now known as the Stanford Prison Experiment. This was a two-week simulation, meant to reflect how ordinary people would respond to being either a prisoner or prison guard.

Taillon allowed two hits over six shutout innings before being replaced in the seventh with a 5-0 lead.
Young offenders captured on camera
An exhibition focussing on young people’s experience of prison has opened at the National Justice Museum in Nottingham. It is centred round photographs taken by American photographer Richard Ross for his ‘Juvenile in Justice’ project. Using images and testimonies, it explores the lives of young people in the American justice system and the parallels with the British juvenile justice system.
Drawing Together in Scotland: The Opportunities and Challenges for Young Refugees within a ‘Relational Wellbeing’ Approach to Integration
1. Introduction Over time, some unaccompanied asylum-seeking young people are successful in their asylum claim and are recognised as refugees. When they resettle into host nations, a powerful dynamic plays out. After long periods of waiting, when they have not been in charge of their movements forward in life (Kohli and Kaukko 2018), they are invited to integrate in a lifelong way into their new countries. There is permission to establish new rhythms and patterns of living.
This New Policy Would Transform Workplaces - For the Better
An idea that would make working parents’ lives so much easier. Here’s an idea for companies that say they care about working parents: What about creating Care Days? They’re not Personal Days, or even Sick Days. And they’re certainly not Vacation Days. Care Days would allow employees to tell co-workers why they’re actually out. Most employees wouldn’t take all of them, unless they really needed them. And companies that go first would be putting action behind words. So what are these Care Days?

Unique opportunity at School of Folk Arts - Mississippi's Best Community Newspaper
Unique opportunity at School of Folk Arts By Paul D. Sullivan Did you know that indigo was grown in Natchez as a cash crop a hundred years before cotton became king? Natchez once had a thriving indigo industry up and down the river bank. Ships sailed from Natchez to England carrying indigo dye cakes processed in Natchez from locally grown indigo. Natchez indigo made its way into the blue British Navy uniforms of the early 1800s.
Young Queer People Teach Their Teachers
EASTHAM — A weird and difficult and rarely-touched-upon part of being a young queer person is that, often, you have to take on the role of educator. Most obviously, there’s coming out: educating people about who you are. Then — and this is the really hard part — there’s teaching people what to do with that information. You find yourself educating the people who should be educating you: your teachers, your parents, your elders — the people, you fear, who are the least likely to understand you.
Truro School Board Votes to Add Pre-K Places
TRURO — The school committee on April 29 approved a plan to expand the town’s free preschool program so that it can accommodate all the three- and four-year-old children of residents and town employees on a five-days-a-week schedule by the next school year. Investigating complaints in lockdown
We are now well into the third month of lockdown and we know how challenging it has been for everyone who lives, or works, in prison. With regimes restricted and most outside agencies unable to work within the walls, independent scrutiny of our prisons has never been so important. In March, along with other scrutiny bodies, we had to suspend our visits and at the same time couldn’t access our post to read letters of complaint or to receive documents to inform our investigations.
Pentonville students create book marking partnership with PET
Students at HMP Pentonville have written and designed a commemorative book marking the prison’s 20-year partnership with PET – packed full of artwork, poetry, and testimonies from learners and staff (above and on next page). In this foreword, Project Lead Jose Aguiar explains the background to this innovative project. Prison education can open up opportunities, broaden horizons, transform life chances and personal identity. The way education is organised in prisons varies a great deal.

Birds help ease mental health struggles at Altcourse
Since 2012, prisoners at Altcourse, managed by G4S, have been caring for birds of prey inside the prison walls. Most of the birds have been donated by a Warrington-based charity and they are cared for by a small team of prisoners who have been selected for good behaviour. Six of the men work as full-time falconers and support other men struggling with mental health issues. The birds are handled every day and need to be cleaned, health checked, fed and exercised.
What do children in custody think about their education?
At any one time, up to 1,000 children aged between 12 and 17 can be in prisons or secure training centres. Francesca Cooney, PET’s Head of Policy, reviews the recent report from HM Inspectorate of Prisons (HMIP) on children in custody and outlines what it tells us about access to education.
Security Categorisation
In February, HMPPS published the Security Categorisation Policy Framework. This document has details about how the categorisation process is changing across the prison estate. This policy is being rolled out in stages and will only come into force at the prison you are in when the Digital Categorisation Service (DCS) is in use there. The DCS is described as ‘an online form and the mechanism for making, recording and justifying categorisation decisions.

Boris’s prison expansion plans
‘I WANT MORE!’ New PM wants 10,000 more prison places // Vows to do more to educate and rehabilitate // Prison reformers unimpressed with expansion plans. Prime Minister Boris Johnson (above) has vowed to use prison more than any other time in our history “We are creating another 10,000 spaces in our prisons,” he wrote in a tabloid newspaper recently. “It is not enough just to catch the criminals, punish them and deter them from further crime.
The Great Grape Debate
By 1997, the students who had pressured Harvard to boycott grapes in 1992 had graduated. To many students, the absence of grapes didn’t signify the presence of an ongoing boycott, but rather simply went unnoticed. By Paul G. Sullivan Feb 28, 2019 In November of 1997, the Fruit of the Loom logo, once relegated to tags on the underwear of dowdy freshmen boys, found itself on 400 posters throughout Harvard’s campus. Adam R.

What went wrong at HMP Birmingham?
In the Annual Performance Figures for 2017-18, published by the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) in July, HMP Birmingham scored the lowest possible: 1 out of 4, which means ‘of serious concern’. There were 14 other prisons which achieved the lowest score alongside them. The latest ‘cost per prisoner’ figure there was £28,402, which was the lowest cost per prisoner of all the male local prisons, except Doncaster, run by Serco.
Armchair Ventures: Shannon Museum a Natural for Its Battlefield Location
I was chatting with a friend about the “new” Shannon Air Museum. That’s “new,” with quotes, as the museum, with its aircraft and thousands of artifacts, has a long local history. It reopened at Shannon Airport last year and is so different that it might as well be new.I won’t retell the entire story of the Shannon Air Museum, created at the airport in the 1970s by Sidney L.
HMP EXETER: ‘SIGNIFICANT PROBLEMS’
Self-harm had risen 40% since last inspection / Living conditions ‘unacceptably poor’ / Assaults were amongst the highest inspectors had seen / Use of force by staff was ‘ungoverned’ / 25% of prisoners tested positive for drugs / ‘Failure to address lack of safety’ For the second time in just a few months HM Chief Inspector of Prisons (HMCIP) has referred a prison to the Justice Secretary under the Urgent Notification Protocol following an unannounced inspection in May.
A NATIONAL DISGRACE
In January, the Chief Inspector of Prisons, Peter Clarke, was so disturbed by what he found during an inspection of HMP Nottingham that he made it the first referral to the Justice Secretary under the new ‘Urgent Notification Protocol’. Now the actual report, described as “one of the most disturbing reports in recent years” has been published and Mr Clarke asks if some of the apparently self-inflicted deaths were caused by prisoners unable to “face life in the violent, drug ridden prison”.
Joe Maddon impressed by Anthony Rizzo’s emotional speech at vigil
Anthony Rizzo's emotional speech Thursday in Florida at the vigil for victims of the Parkland school shooting continued to reverberate a day later. Manager Joe Maddon texted his first baseman afterwards, telling Rizzo how proud he was after watching a video of the heartfelt speech on his iPad. "What he said and how he said it, and the manner in which he said it, was really impressive," Maddon said Friday.

Historic Tax Credit needed in Toledo
Remember when The Blade and the Block family took a stand, and today we have a cultural treasure in the Valentine Theater? A fight was waged in order to do the right thing. Many recalled the lost Paramount and vowed to never let that happen again. The ability to do the right thing was enhanced by utilizing a tool called the Federal Historic Tax Credit.

New pitfall for family partnerships

And the prospect that the tax code could be changed by the end of this year has tax planners pushing their clients to consider stepping up estate and business planning, or risk paying more taxes.
Road trips sell clients on contrarian investments
Stephen Emery has a day job that positions him well to understand how to invest other people’s money. He is the managing director of sales and trading at Mission Capital Advisors, which focuses on real estate securities. But investing his own money poses different challenges. So when asked this year by a financial adviser to join an investment trip to Silicon Valley, he jumped at the chance. “The trip to the Valley was fascinating and tremendously beneficial,” said Emery, 38, who lives in New York.
YOUR MONEY When inheritance is unequal
Children crave equal attention from their parents. So when it comes to inheritance, which can seem like a final accounting of that love, anything but an equal split can be tough to grasp. But is there ever a time when inheritance should be uneven? And if so, can uneven still be fair? The answer to both questions is yes.
