Google already tried to own hotel bookings. It quit. In May 2022, Google shut down "Book on Google" for hotels. Low take-up. Guests didn't trust a checkout they didn't choose. Hotels didn't push it. The following year, it killed "Buy on Google" in retail too. The lesson everyone took away: Google can't own the transaction. It can only send you traffic. That lesson just expired.

Investors are pouring money into "OTA 2.0". VCs are betting that direct bookings are about to stop being direct. According to a panel at Skift Asia Forum in Bangkok last week, capital is moving towards the bet that AI agents will replace Booking.com and Expedia Group. The vision is a guest that arrives without a confirmation email. Says “my assistant booked it”. The reservation is there. But none of the guest data is there with it.
