To avoid Congressional oversight and accountability, Donald Trump ignited a gerrymandering arms race that is redrawing districts in many states around the country. Republican legislators in Texas, North Carolina, and Ohio have all bent the knee in fealty to the wannabe-king. To protect our democracy, Democrats are fighting fire with fire where they can. That is why mid-decade redistricting is under consideration in Virginia.

On Sept. 26, 2024, several colleagues and I were called into an afternoon meeting with FEMA Public Assistance leadership. Hurricane Helene impacts to Western North Carolina were imminent, and we had to effectuate the draft Mitigation Cost Share Incentives policy to help the likely victims in that rural part of America. FEMA leadership signed the draft policy to make sure that as many funds as possible would be available to assist disaster survivors after landfall.
