For years, scientists have had the ability to gauge total greenhouse emissions numbers for the planet, but they've never had a way to trace — quickly and specifically — where those emissions are coming from.
Allyship’s Day of Reckoning is Here
If we’re going to adopt the label, we’d better live up to its charge Clay Banks | Unsplash Let me start by saying this: I am all the things. Those things include: White. Male. Heterosexual. Gentile. I live in a community with good air and water and a lower violent crime rate than the national average. These are my things, and this context will make more sense in a moment. Now, let’s continue. Allyship is having a moment; It needs to have an era Allyship is having a moment. Quite literally.

EW-DOS Part 3 of 3: Three reasons to embrace shared, decentralized solutions rather than exclusively go it alone with proprietary tech. Blockchain and other decentralized solutions are quickly reaching a tipping point in enterprise adoption across the energy sector, but why?
Learning from Aloha: Hawaii’s energy transformation
Aerial view of a solar energy panel and forest on Kauai, Hawaii. In March 2011, a massive 9.0 earthquake off the coast of Japan precipitated a cascading series of events that ultimately sparked Hawaii’s rooftop solar boom more than 4,000 miles away. As Japan shuttered its nuclear fleet and ramped up production from its oil-fired generators, global demand for oil increased, and so did prices.

WARNING: SIGN-IN You need to be a member of Energy Central to access some features and content. Please sign-in or register to continue. In the years ahead, Austria expects customers to connect more than 1 million DERs—from solar PV to batteries to EVs—to the country's power grid. They’re now asking the same question that grid operators worldwide are beginning to ponder: how can they realistically integrate and transact with those devices in an efficient and low-cost manner?
Lateral Cooking: One Dish Leads to Another
It’s taken seven years for Segnit to write the follow-up to The Flavor Thesaurus, but it is well worth the wait. Segnit takes a revelatory approach to cooking techniques. The 12 sections use different jumping-off points, such as Roux, Batter, or Bread, to explore the interrelations of a continuum of recipes: nuts become marzipan, which leads to macaroons, nut cakes, and frangipane, but also to the savory tarator sauce and fesenjan (Persian walnut stew).
No Gluten, No Problem Pizza
Review by Diane H, Reviewer Last updated on 04 Nov 2019 My Recommendation Frozen and fast casual gluten-free pizza is always thin as a cracker and rather flavorless. But in the No Gluten, No Problem Pizza cookbook, the authors provide a plethora of pizza options including Chicago Deep Dish and New York-style pizzas. Variety is no problem. For you thin crust fans, there are four variations on roman cracker dough and four more on tavern dough, which is less crunchy but still thin.
Cleaner EV Charging Can Reduce Curtailment
Cleaner EV Charging Can Reduce Curtailment 15 Nov 2019 By Christy Lewis and Peter Bronski The first half of 2019 was record-setting for renewable energy, though not necessarily for good reasons: in May, California curtailed a record-high 223,000 MWh of solar and wind power. Across the first five months of the year, solar and wind curtailments in the Golden State were more than twice what they were during the same period one year earlier.
How Workplace EV Charging and Electrified Corporate Fleets Can Become Even Cleaner
In mid-September 2019, Internet retail giant Amazon caught the world’s attention with the announcement of its order of 100,000 electric delivery vans, possibly the largest such electric vehicle (EV) order ever. It is the latest major milestone in EVs’ accelerating role as a core component of corporate sustainability. Amazon’s news follows on an early-2019 announcement from ride-hailing app Lyft to similarly add thousands of EVs to its fleet, all of them powered by 100 percent renewable energy.
Don't just stop the bloodletting: Utility survival and prosperity in a DER-centric future
The following is a contributed article by Peter Bronski and Arno Laeven of the Energy Web Foundation. The electricity sector's ongoing and accelerating transition is being accompanied by massive shifts in capital. This is about far more than sunk costs and stranded legacy fossil-fueled assets vs. growing investment in renewable, low-carbon generation. The far bigger capital shift is from large, bulk power system assets to billions of smaller, grid-edge assets.

The energy sector needs to stop seeing blockchain as a disruption
Thursday, June 6, 2019 - 12:17am The energy sector is undergoing a much-hyped metamorphosis. Across both sides of the blockchain aisle — both industries contemplating the technology’s implications and evangelists advocating its adoption — people often describe blockchain as the next big disruptor. Skeptics tend to see such claims of blockchain-based disruption as overblown, while the pro-blockchain community tends to see it ushering in nothing short of a decentralized revolution.
Is Blockchain a disruptor? Or the solution to an already-disrupted energy sector
The global energy sector is already facing multiple, concurrent disruptions that are fundamentally transforming electricity markets around the world: digitalisation, decarbonisation, decentralisation, and electric mobility. It’s creating residential prosumers, with their solar panels, electric vehicles, smart thermostats (the list is growing) and a predicted global installed distributed energy resources (DERs) capacity of 530 GW by 2026, according to Navigant.
The Energy Sector Needs to Stop Seeing Blockchain as a Disruption
Across both sides of the blockchain aisle—both industries contemplating the technology’s implications and evangelists advocating its adoption—people often describe blockchain as the next big disruptor. Skeptics tend to see such claims of blockchain-based disruption as overblown, while the pro-blockchain community tends to see it ushering in nothing short of a decentralized revolution. But they all use that word: disruptor.

Bridging the gap: Blockchain in the energy sector
In 1994, Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates famously quipped, “Banking is necessary; banks are not.” More than 30 years later, those words sound particularly prescient, as blockchain-based cryptocurrencies have proliferated while disintermediating fintech and making secure, verifiable, and essentially bank-less transactions between parties possible.

MotionWerk Launching Share&Charge Foundation, Plans Electric Vehicle Charging on Energy Web Blockchain
Food for thought: "Imagine drivers of internal combustion engine autos filling up their tanks only at a certain brand of gas (i.e., petrol) station to which they chose to become a member. Likewise, imagine a petrol station owner/operator only allowing certain car drivers to fill up their tanks and turning away the rest of that potential business. It’s laughable.
MotionWerk Launching Share&Charge Foundation, Plans Electric Vehicle Charging on Energy Web Blockchain
If market forecasts are to be believed—and reality has been consistently outpacing forecasts in recent years—electric vehicles (EVs) are the future of automotive mobility. That’s the resounding conclusion of a pair of reports released earlier this year from the Paris-based International Energy Agency (IEA) and the London- and New York-based Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF). In May, IEA released its latest EV forecast, predicting 125 million EVs on the world’s roadways by 2030.

Corporations can generate one-third more impact with their renewables investment. Here’s how.
In 2017, companies in 75 countries actively sourced a total of 465 terawatt-hours of electricity, nearly equal to the overall annual electricity consumption of France. Corporate renewable energy procurement is at an all-time high and showing no signs of slowing down. In the United States, the Rocky Mountain Institute’s Business Renewables Center (BRC) tracked a total of ~30 projects contracted by nearly 20 companies. The wind and solar projects spanned more than a dozen states.
How Michigan’s 50% Clean Energy Target Could Open New Emissions Reduction Opportunities
In May of this year, Michigan’s two largest utilities announced a 50% clean energy goal by 2030. Reducing and avoiding greenhouse gas emissions is crucial to public health for the state, which has struggled with poor air quality for years. Cleantech startup WattTime found this news to be hugely exciting for new reasons: they believe the value of renewables lies in how much “dirty energy” they can displace; location plays a huge part in how much renewables can clean up our air.
Clean Energy Portfolios Could be an Avoided Emissions Juggernaut
More than 100 gigawatts of new, announced natural gas power plants are planned for the U.S. through 2025. That “rush to gas” comes with a hefty price tag, locking in $1 trillion in combined infrastructure investment and fuel costs. It also comes with a massive emissions footprint: 5 billion tons of CO2 through 2030 and 16 billion tons through the 20-year lifetimes of those gas plants. Could clean energy portfolios obviate such as a costly scenario? According to the Rocky Mountain Institute, yes.
How to Save a United States’ Worth of Carbon Emissions
In 2017, global energy-related CO2 emissions rose 1.4% to a record-high 32.5 gigatons. Looking ahead to the rest of 2018, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) March 2018 release of its Short-Term Energy Outlook, U.S. energy-related CO2 emissions are expected to rise by 1.0% in 2018, followed by another 0.8% in 2019. In the wake of the Paris Agreement, it all could be seen as a discouraging setback in the race to decarbonize the energy sector.
How software developers will write the future of energy through blockchain
It was 75 years ago this month that construction began on ENIAC, the world’s first digital, programmable, Turing-complete computer. Funded by the U.S. Army and housed at the University of Pennsylvania, its advent unlocked a new technological era for the world. We may now be on the precipice of yet another transformative moment, this time with blockchain.
How Blockchain Can Manage the Future Electricity Grid
Organizations like the Energy Web Foundation have been working to answer an important question: how will we someday manage an electricity grid with billions of connected, customer-sited technologies? The approach to date has largely been to "bolt on" solutions, such as centralized Internet of Things (IoT) cloud computing, to manage distributed solutions such as VPPs and microgrids.Yet this approach will eventually create limitations.
From additionality to 'emissionality': how companies can magnify their impact
It’s no secret that in recent years corporations have embraced their fast-growing role in clean energy and climate leadership. As Bloomberg New Energy Finance noted in January, last year was record-setting for corporate clean energy purchasing globally. And not only are more companies actively finding ways to source renewable energy, many continue to push the environmental frontier further. Purchasing unbundled renewable energy credits (RECs) was once the norm.
How blockchain can manage the future electricity grid
Every month, it seems that blockchain’s potential to revolutionize the energy sector is proclaimed anew, from Wired Magazine announcing that "microgrids and the blockchain are powering our energy future" to Renewable Energy World claiming that "blockchain could change everything for energy". There’s a growing degree of certainty that blockchain will transform the energy system. But the question is how.
When it Comes to Throughput, Transactions Per Second is the Wrong Blockchain Metric
A contentious debate over blockchain in the energy sector is raging on and the question is this: can it ever realistically scale to handle the full grid? With blockchain’s reputation as a “slow technology,” will it ever play a meaningful role in global energy use? But what if critics were simply focusing on the wrong metric to judge the potential value of blockchain in energy? The Energy Web Foundation would argue that this narrow way of thinking simply misses the bigger picture.

Almina Francese's Antipasto - The Cook's Cook
In the pantheon of mothers-in-law, my mother-in-law, Almina Irali Francese, is the brightest shining star. Briefly, here is her story. Almina Maria Giuseppina Irali was born on January 21, 1908 in Cozzanello di Monchio, Parma, Italy. She was the second oldest of twelve children. She and her parents emigrated to the United States when Almina was a toddler, eventually settling in Readsboro, Vermont, just north of the Massachusetts border.
Corporate Renewables Surging: Bloomberg New Energy Finance Weighs In
When it comes to corporate renewable energy procurement, 2015 was a year for the record books, especially with respect to power purchase agreements (PPAs) for large-scale, off-site solar and wind projects. Corporations signed more than 3 GW of such deals, according to Rocky Mountain Institute. And though 2016 got off to a comparatively sluggish start, the corporate renewables market is again picking up significant steam.

As the Industry Matures, Not All Solar is Created Equal
A few short weeks ago in late August, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) released two new solar industry reports: the 9th annual installment of its popular Tracking the Sun series and the 4th edition of its Utility-Scale Solar series. Collectively they assessed the residential, non-residential, and utility-scale solar PV market in the United States, this time for calendar year 2015.
Global Clean Energy Investment Down, But U.S. Utility Solar Remains Strong
Earlier this month, Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) announced seemingly concerning news: global investment in clean energy for Q3 2016 represented the single worst quarter since Q1 2013, down a staggering 43% over Q3 2015. After 2015’s record of $348.5 billion in global clean energy investment, 2016 is almost certain to track well below that number. Analysts point a collective finger of blame at slowdowns in several international markets, including China, Japan, and Europe.
