Vegan Parmigiana di Melanzane (Eggplant Parmigiana)
If you’re a fan of rich Mediterranean flavors, you’ll love this beautiful Melanzane. Peter Egan of the acclaimed Downton Abbey is an incredible actor and passionate animal lover. He took part in Veganuary and has never looked back. “I will always support Veganuary,” Egan says, “but I won’t have to do it again because I am now vegan.” In honor of Egan’s vegan transformation, we’re bringing you a cruelty-free version of one of his favorite dishes, which just so happens to be an Italian classic.
Close Encounters of the Best Kind
Yesterday, March 9, 2026, would have been Malcolm Smith’s 85th birthday. Peter Egan recounts meeting the legend for the first time. If you want to run into famous people by accident, it’s hard to beat the greater LA area. On the weekend I arrived in Southern California from Wisconsin to take my new job at Cycle World, editor Allan Girdler kindly drove me up and down the Coast Highway near our Newport Beach office to acquaint me with the area.
Three great reads for the gearhead on your holiday gift list
At the end of November, the first real snowfall in Calgary heralds Christmas and thoughts of placing wrapped gifts under the tree. That means it’s time to offer a few suggestions in the annual seasonal book column. I always encourage supporting a local bookshop before placing an online order. However the books are purchased, though, here’s to a snug winter’s reading. In August I wrote about renowned motorcycle and automotive columnist Peter Egan’s newest book. It is worth mentioning here again.

The US News & World Report released its best diets for 2024, and once again, the Mediterranean diet, which emphasizes whole foods, healthy fats, beans, and greens, with very few animal products, was crowned number one. It is the seventh year in a row that the diet—which is influenced by the traditional eating habits of countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea, such as Greece, Italy, and Spain—has been given the top spot.

The number pictured is kilometers per hour.Matt Tierney There’s nothing quite like the whoop of a few 12-cylinder engines outside your hotel room at night to suggest you might not be in Kansas anymore. Or even California. Especially when you hear distant artillery fire mixed with the occasional bark of a highly tuned Porsche flat-six.
Peter Egan exposes the gruelling plight of Egypt's donkeys
Actor and animal rights campaigner Peter Egan travelled to Egypt to witness first-hand the plight of donkeys working in brick kilns – and to discover what one British charity is doing to help them I was a little nervous about my trip to Egypt in October 2023, which I was making in my capacity as patron of Safe Haven for Donkeys, an animal welfare charity that works to support donkeys there, as well as in Israel and the West Bank.

Four ways defence can lead construction’s net-zero drive
As we count down to COP 28, defence veteran Peter Egan FCIOB argues that the sector can be a leading client for sustainable best practice in the built environment. The UK defence industry is one of the largest and most influential in the world, with a budget of over £20bn and a workforce of more than 200,000. With the government’s 2050 net-zero commitment, the Ministry of Defence is setting out to build a more modern, fit-for-purpose and sustainable estate, driving change in four key areas.

The Fight To Ban Foie Gras
Foie gras produced by force-feeding is immensely cruel and controversial. Millions of ducks and geese are force-fed on farms every year to produce foie gras, a so-called delicacy which only a small fraction of people eat. Force-feeding ducks and geese to produce foie gras is already banned in several countries including Czech Republic, Finland, Italy, Poland, Germany and Turkey.
The 1995 BMW M3 Is a Genuine Automotive Pleasure
GUY SPANGENBERG A sports car for the Nineties? Purists may wince. How can a car that carries four people comfortably and has an excellent sound system, air conditioning and electrically operated windows be a sports car? What about the old “contains nothing that doesn’t make the car go faster” ethic? Aren’t sports cars supposed to be just a little harsh and difficult? No, sayeth the engineers at BMW, they are not.
Lessons Learned, Challenges Overcome, Part 2
Riding a bike from the Good Old Days teaches us how much better we have it today. 15 hours ago Kevin Cameron has been writing about motorcycles for nearly 50 years, first for Cycle magazine and, since 1992, for Cycle World.Robert Martin This is part two of a two-part story. Part 1 appeared earlier this week here. We continue our appreciation of modern machines as revealed through the tribulations faced by motorcycle designers in the 1950s.

What is a sustainable client?
Construction still has a long way to go on sustainability but clients can make significant progress by taking a step-by-step approach, argues Peter Egan. Image: Dreamstime/Lovelyday12 Sustainability is no longer tomorrow’s problem. So how can construction clients take steps to becoming more sustainable? First of all, it’s important to take a whole carbon approach. Construction needs to understand where it has the largest impact, enabling it to effect the greatest changes.
How the MG TC Ignited America's Postwar Roadster Obsession
Several years ago, I suffered another of my periodic bouts of sleepless, sweat-soaked MG TC fever and told my friend and neighbor, Chris Beebe, that I was possibly in the hunt for one of these fine cars again. There was a long, thoughtful silence on the phone, and then he said, “Have you driven one lately?” “No,” I admitted, “it’s been a long time.” “Well, why don’t you take mine for a drive and see what you think.
The Latest Volume of Road & Track Is About Analog Cars
The first Road & Track cover hit newsstands in June of 1947. The magazine was 33 pages long and cost 25 cents, and featured five open-wheel cars racing in the 1946 René le Bègue Cup, a grand prix held in the Parisian suburb of Saint-Cloud. The magazine logo was bordered by bands of red, but the photo itself is black and white.

Side Glances: Reflections on 1499 Monrovia Original
When my wife, Barbara, and I moved back to Wisconsin in 1990, after 10 years in California, the Mayflower estimator looked around our home and gave us some advice.“You have a lot of books and a whole wall of magazines,” she said, “and they are very heavy. I would get rid of those you don’t want and then ship the rest by parcel post. It’ll actually be cheaper than hauling them in the moving van.” This story originally appeared in the November/December 2020 issue of Road & Track.
Joe Parkhurst, the Original Enthusiast
A photo essay of how he set the direction for 58 years in print 6 minutes ago Parkhurst in a nutshell: smiling and riding a motorcycle. “I often marveled at the incredible life I was leading as it unfolded. Here we were at one of the greatest tracks in the world, and it belonged to us for the day. We could ride endless hours, as fast as we were able. Silly to say, it was fun…pure fun of the kind few experience. And we got paid to do it! Did I ever feel guilty for such an abuse of privilege?

WILL YOU HELP END CRUEL LIVE EXPORTS?
The decades-long journey to ban UK live exports has not been easy. But the tireless campaigning of people like you has achieved huge strides forward. Together, we’ve helped stop live exports on passenger ferries. We've helped reduce the number of UK animals exported for slaughter and fattening from 2.5 million a year to tens of thousands. We've protested at ports and outside Parliament. And, in 2020, you even pushed the Scottish Government to halt live calf exports.

Thomas L. Bryant, 1943 - 2020
Long-time readers will be sad to learn that former R&T Editor-in-Chief Tom Bryant passed away on March 4th of this year, at the age of 76, due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease. He was living on Bainbridge Island, Washington, where he and his wife Patty Bryant moved after Tom’s retirement in 2008. Tom came on board as Editor in 1988 and ran the magazine for 20 years.

The Problems With the American Driver
This classic Side Glances originally appeared in the December, 2005 issue of Road & Track WHEN OUR MOTORCYCLE CAME OVER THE rise and around the corner, I laughed out loud for a brief moment, then put my head down on the gas tank in the standard gesture of despair and defeat. Ahead of us on this beautiful, curving, double-yellow roller coaster of a road along the rugged shores of Quebec were four slow-moving vehicles. They were, in this order: a large motorhome, a cop car and two big motorcycles.

How aid relief can operate more effectively in a digital future
Peter Egan from the Corps of Royal Engineers explains how using digital technology is helping the UN and aid agencies do more with less by reducing construction waste, strategic costs and improving operational practises and maintenance. The problem Since the end of the Second World War and more recently the 9/11 attacks the world has become a more turbulent place.
An Evening With Peter Egan Following The Quail Motorcycle Gathering
Ever wonder what it’s like to hang out with Peter Egan? Well, in a way, you already know, just by reading his work. That’s the beauty of Egan’s writing. It is as real, insightful, and entertaining as the man himself. Still, there’s nothing like the real thing, so please come join Cycle World for An Evening with Peter Egan, following The Quail Motorcycle Gathering in Carmel, California, May 4, 2019.
Motoring Through America's Lake District, Where Old Is New Again
AS THE CAR FERRY BAYFIELD approached Madeline Island harbor, Barb and I descended from the observation deck and headed back to the Morgan. We were first in line to disembark and didn’t want to hold up the show.
2019 Harley-Davidson CVO And Special Models First Ride
Much conjecture filled the air when Harley recently announced a two-day press ride from Minneapolis to Milwaukee over the rustic back roads of Wisconsin. We were to ride an exciting new model (to be announced) across the state and then arrive at the H-D factory on the weekend of its 115th Anniversary celebration. What would it be? The new LiveWire electric bike? Perhaps an early glimpse of the promised 2020 Pan America adventure-tourer?

The 1991-1997 Ducati 900SS Is The Used Motorcycle You Need
If the 1980s was the age of Disco, then you might say the 1990s was the age of Ducati—at least for those of us who like the music of big-bore Desmo V-twins from Italy. For me and many of my riding friends, the bikes from Borgo Panigale are still perhaps the most enduring and colorful symbol of good times from that decade, as remembered through a lens of vibrant red or bright yellow—or maybe even ebony black, over a white trellis frame.
Driving the Ultimate Naturally Aspirated Corvette
IT LOOKED LIKE A SCENE RIGHT OFF a Hawaiian shirt, even if we were in Florida: Full moon rising over palm trees, big orange ball of sun sinking slowly beneath the horizon. Unfortunately, it wasn’t sinking quite slowly enough, for our purposes.

Once More Into the Great Wide Open
I love story assignments that begin with the question “How would you like to . . .” There’s almost always an element of adventure involved, for better or worse. This story originally appeared in the July, 2017 issue of R&T. “How would you like to drive a real Russian T-34 tank through the radioactive ruins of Chernobyl?” might be an example from the “worse” column, but my latest offer sounded pretty good.
A Brief Social History Of The Black Leather Jacket-From The Archives
This article was originally published in the September 1997 issue of Cycle World. It was an embarrassing moment for me. A couple of years ago, I went out to lunch with a bunch of employees at the rock-and-roll station where my brother used to work. One of the younger DJs came with us, wearing a black leather motorcycle jacket of The Wild One variety. Without thinking, I asked what kind of motorcycle he had. “Motorcycle?” he said, looking at me, blinking. “I don’t have any motorcycle.
Norton Commando, Fifty Years of History
It's funny how your tastes can change with time. For instance, when I first tried a sip of homemade corn liquor as a youth I thought it tasted like paint remover. But I tried some again recently and decided just the opposite is true. Also, when the first Norton Commando was introduced in September of 1967 at the Earl’s Court show in London, I examined the photos of the new Fastback and immediately decided it was not for me. Too swoopy and radical, not traditionally British enough.

2018 Harley-Davidson Softail(s) first ride review
The previous article outlines some of the changes to the non-Touring Big Twins for 2018. TL;DR: Collectively, these bikes are great. So now let's look at some of the details on the individual models. With the exception of a few, I only have about four miles under my belt on each one, so these first impressions are very, very rudimentary. Please overlook any mistakes or rash judgments I’ve made here.
2018 Harley-Davidson Softails First Rides
Motorcycle designers the world over must currently be asking themselves the question famously (and repeatedly) posed by Axl Rose a few years back, which is, “Where do we go now?” The motorcycle market has softened a bit these days as the once-spendthrift boomers begin to ponder the advantages of downsizing or develop “issues” (which used to be called “dread diseases”) and simply quit riding. Or worse yet, suddenly drop dead.
CW ARCHIVES: A Backroad Trip to the Honda Hoot and CW Rolling Concours
Much of our older content has been stored on the back shelves of our offices... we always have fun looking back at days gone by and we hope you enjoy these little gems as well! How would you like to come down to the Honda Hoot in Knoxville this year,” Editor Edwards asked me, “and be a judge in our Cycle World Rolling Concours?” I rolled my impressive captain-of-industry desk chair around on its small, squeaky wheels and studied my huge wall map of the USA.

Much of our older content has been stored on the back shelves of our offices... we always have fun looking back at days gone by and we hope you enjoy these little gems as well! Despite my natural tendency to make excuses for classic British motorcycle designs, no matter how perfidious or diabolical, it was hard to put a good spin on my first encounter, about 15 years ago, with the Indian-built Royal Enfield 500 Bullet.
