Competing with smart machines: the dark side of ‘conjoined agency’ in contemporary organizations
While many are concerned about artificial intelligence (AI) enabled automation and the threat of mass technological unemployment, this paper contributes to a stream of organizational research that suggests semi-automation is a more probable scenario. A growing subtheme in this stream emphasizes ‘conjoined agency’, where employees collaborate with smart machines rather than be subordinated by them. In this paper, we argue that conjoined agency has a hitherto unexamined dark side.
Unexpected deaths in infancy: how understanding of causes and prevention has developed over 100 years
2011–2025 Our fourth and final period brings us from 2011 up to the present day. Continued falls in rates in the UK have considerably slowed (figure 3), prompting the need to look in depth at the characteristics of infants and families still affected by these tragedies.

Fibroblastic reticular cells direct the initiation of T cell responses via CD44 - Nature
Abstract The movement of dendritic cells and T cells within secondary lymphoid organs is critical for the development of adaptive immune responses1,2. Central to this process is the fibroblastic reticular cell (FRC) network, which forms a highly organized conduit system that facilitates the movement of and interactions between dendritic cells and T cells3,4,5,6. Previous studies have partly characterized how FRCs support these interactions7,8.

Who is to Blame for the Government Shutdown?
Categories: With the current government shutdown now nearing a month, making it the second longest in history, the blame game remains strong among political circles. While House Democrat leaders have hit the press hard, accusing Republican leaders of refusing to find a solution to end the shutdown, Republicans within the Trump administration have taken to government websites, pinning blame on their Democrat counterparts.

IL-6-mediated endothelial injury impairs antiviral humoral immunity after bone marrow transplantation
Abstract Endothelial function and integrity are compromised after allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT), but how this affects immune responses broadly remains unknown. Using a preclinical model of CMV reactivation after BMT, we found compromised antiviral humoral responses induced by IL-6 signaling.

An adapted stem cell-derived microglia protocol for the study of microgliopathies and other neurological disorders
Abstract Background: Adult-onset leukoencephalopathy with axonal spheroids and pigmented glia (ALSP) is a primary microgliopathy caused by pathogenic variants in the colony-stimulating factor 1 receptor (CSF1R) gene. Since CSF1R signaling is crucial for microglia development, survival and function, induced pluripotent stem cell-derived microglia (iMGL) represent an excellent tool in studying microglial defects caused by ALSP patient-specific CSF1R variants.
Surveying wildlife and livestock in Uganda with aerial cameras: Deep Learning reduces the workload of human interpretation by over 70%

A radical pessimist’s glossary of exploitative economics. The near future is more likely to be a neoliberal dystopia than the tech-enabled utopia conjured up by big business, writes Peter Fleming in The Worst Is Yet to Come: A Post-Capitalist Survival Guide. He argues that we need “radical pessimism” to aim for the future we actually want, and aids the effort with sardonic humor that skewers the mythologies of our exploitative economic system. In 1949, the right-wing economist F. A.
On why Uber has not taken over the world
Introduction There has been much public and academic interest in the emergence of the ‘sharing’ or ‘gig economy’. Sometimes dubbed ‘platform capitalism’ (Srnicek, 2016 Srnicek, N. (2016). Platform capitalism. Cambridge: Polity Press. [Google Scholar]), this mode of employment sees individuals compete for jobs via online platforms, using a work-performed payment structure (De Stefano, 2015 De Stefano, D. (2015).

Strain-specific antibody therapy prevents cytomegalovirus reactivation after transplantation
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection and reactivation are common and potentially fatal complications after bone marrow or hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (BMT). Martins et al. developed faithful preclinical murine models of CMV reactivation following BMT and found that humoral immunity can prevent this process (see the Perspective by Alegre).

'Tough leadership' and humiliation: why is workplace bullying still so prevalent?
Last Friday, the Intensive Care Unit at Sydney's Westmead Hospital was stripped of its training accreditation after allegations of bullying by senior medical staff. NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard said medical specialists have to understand that this is the 21st century. "There is absolutely not one millimetre of room for a culture of bullying or failure to provide respect to every staff member," he said.
CEO pay is more about white male entitlement than value for money
What a week it was for the CEO class. On the Monday, July 16, the Bloomberg Billionaires Index announced that Amazon chief Jeff Bezos had amassed a personal net worth of over US$150 billion. He’s the richest person in modern history. On Tuesday, the Australian Council of Superannuation Investors published a report showing that total pay for Australian corporate bosses hit a 17-year high in 2017. Topping the list was Domino’s Pizzas chief Don Meij who received a hefty annual income of A$36.8 million.

The Company Tax Cut Con: Someone Is Getting Rich. It Probably Isn't You
Malcolm Turnbull’s company tax cuts work on the theory that people with more, will get more and give more. Professor Peter Fleming remains unconvinced. Do company tax cuts actually create more jobs and increase wages? That’s the narrative being proffered by the Coalition government and the Business Council of Australia (who plan to launch a major campaign at the next election to convince voters that taxing companies less is the way forward).

Why Should Men Go to Salons Regularly?
Even though for years salons have paid attention to only girls and women, today the scenario is changing slowly but steadily. Men are constantly being encouraged to take care of their looks and be well-groomed. In this digital era, there is a high degree of competitiveness. If you wish to stay ahead of the curve, you need to be well-qualified and well-groomed too. Men would be immensely benefitted by going to a salon of their choice and reliability.

Welcome to the new dark ages, where only the wealthy can retire
As never-ending politically motivated austerity takes hold, more and more people will find they cannot afford to stop work. But it doesn’t have to be like this?. None of this is as “inevitable” as the politicians would have us think. Many societies have an ageing population. But not all of them are willing to shove a frail 75-year-old back into a cut-throat service economy. That’s a specialism of societies that have embraced the utter madness of neoclassical economics, such as the UK and the US.?
