Bidding farewell to my readers after 12 years, but my pen won’t run dry

There are no eternal cocktails, now we know. Exactly 12 years and four months ago, I joined the larger family of the Nation Media Group as a columnist. Over that period, I penned 712 articles—approximately 200,000 shy of a million words. More than 600 of these were published for the Nation and The EastAfrican. This article is my last as a columnist. As I bow out of the columnist stage, it is delightful to reflect on the eventful intellectual odyssey. Why, may I ask, did I take the column?

Weak strategy cost opposition the Mbeere North seat in by-election

Everyone has a plan till they get punched in the mouth,” said Mike Tyson. This has echoes in the recent Mbeere North by-election. Few expected the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) to win this classic Goliath-David duel, which occurred against a strong anti-Ruto wave in Mount Kenya. The ruling party’s Leonard Wamuthende clinched a razor-thin victory, garnering 15,802 votes against the Democratic Party’s Newton Kariuki, who won 15,308 votes.

Only leaders with knowledge can make Kenya a first world country

It is Sir Francis Bacon who said that “Knowledge is power.” In the digital age, knowledge is the cornerstone of poverty eradication and progress. Ahead of the Official State visit of the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, to Kenya on November 23-24, President William Ruto announced that he was moving Kenya from ‘third world’ to a first-world nation by 2055. A leadership with a knowledge deficit is a stumbling block to the Kenyan dream of becoming a first-world nation.
