Don't Be Like Me! Some Mistakes I Made on My Publishing Journey.
😓😓😓😓 My second picture book Super Pizza & Kid Kale comes out this year! Reflecting on the upcoming release of this goofy story about friendship and food puns allowed me to see how far I’ve come in my writing journey. And by that, I mean how many mistakes I made in the beginning! While I think mistakes are a natural part of creative lives, I do want to save pre-published authors some time with a little advice.

Cover Reveal! JET THE CAT (IS NOT A CAT), the Debut Picture Book by Phaea Crede
There’s an adorable new furbaby coming to town! It’s JET THE CAT (IS NOT A CAT), a debut picture book by Phaea Crede! Let’s take a look at that non-feline feline, illustrated by Terry Runyan… Phaea, as you know, the Storystorm Challenge is coming soon, so I’m sure blog readers are going to want to know how the idea for JET began! The original inspiration came from my 3rd grade teacher. Without meaning to (I hope) she made me feel like I couldn’t be a good writer because of my learning disability.
Yes, You Can Be A Happy Mom And Still Have Anxiety
Becoming a parent can affect people who live with anxiety in different ways — for one mom, anxiety after children allowed her to see the roots of worried thoughts as her mind's attempt to ensure a safe family. My anxiety has been with me since I can remember. Wrapped around me like a coat made of static electricity, my anxious state colored nearly ever moment of my life. What if I said the wrong thing and looked stupid in class? What if I tried to play basketball and fell down?
This Feminist Version Of 'Little Red Riding Hood' Made Me Love Fairytales Again
Reading a book 200 times is a surefire way to find out whether you love it or want to throw its rhyming llama couplets into the diaper pail. Children's books especially do a tricky dance for an audience of squinty-eyed parents and wide-eyed tots: the best ones, like a syringe of infant-suspension Tylenol, have a little something for the parent at the end.
After 6 Years Of Being Pregnant or Nursing, I Finally Have My Body To Myself & It’s Terrible
For six and a bit years, I was either pregnant or nursing. That's six and a half years of hormones ruling my life, tiny people living in my uterus, and slightly bigger tiny people owning my boobs. Six and a half years where I lived in a post-baby body that still was not really my own. And I loved it! And then I weaned my younger kid — got my body back, as we say in poisonous corners of the internet where women are only valued for their physical shape — and good lord, everything changed fast.
This Is How Long It Take To *Really* Know Your Child, According To Parents & Experts
The moment Harvey was born, I had the uncanny feeling that I knew my child perfectly. I remember looking at his little face and thinking “there you are," as if he was a person I’d been missing all this time. At 22 months, I described him in my journal: "Sweet, silly, and interested. A little flaky, especially when it comes to other people, but not selfish or jealous. Pretty good sharer. Rolls with the punches. Cautious towards things that seem weird, but quick to come around.
I Was Addicted To Babywearing & TBH I Loved Being *That Person*
It all began with the 7 train in New York City. Even before I was a mom, I’d notice parents struggling to push gigantic strollers into the cramped cars, sometimes knocking into other passengers, and always looking stressed. “I don’t want to do that,” I thought at the time. When I got pregnant myself, I began to notice the monstrous strollers everywhere — blocking the sidewalks, being awkwardly pulled up stairs, running over my feet. “I will NEVER DO THAT!” I swore to the city and my unborn baby.
I Regret Not Sleep-Training My Kids
When I was a child, I had a terrible time falling asleep. I would lay in my bed until the wee hours of the morning completely unable to relax and close my eyes. The reason was simple: I was afraid of the dark. Specifically, I was irrationally afraid that a stranger — human or paranormal — would come into my room and kill me. This fear was so strong that just writing it out now has made my breath ragged and my heart pound.

I Used HIIT Technique To Play With My Kids In Short, Intense Bursts & It Was Low-Key Genius
Being the mom of two young kids, plus working full-time, plus writing on the side, leaves me with plenty of time to work out and stay in shape. Just kidding! It leaves me with almost no time to myself and an endless supply of cheese and crackers to eat off abandoned toddler plates. Desperate to find a way to get some gym time into my life, I stumbled upon high-intensity internal training (HIIT) and it was a big hit. HIIT workouts are perfect for a busy parents.
Co-Sleeping Can Make Moms Depressed, & No It's Not To Do With A Lack Of Sleep
To co-sleep or not to co-sleep; that is the question. Some parents love it, some parents hate it, some parents do it because it’s literally the only way to get their infant to sleep for two hours in a row (I’m looking at you, baby Mabel.) Most co-sleepers say they bed-share because they feel it’s best for the child, but are there any negative consequences for parents? According to a new study from researchers at Penn State, the answer is overwhelmingly yes: co-sleeping can make moms depressed.

The Post-Baby Period Feelings Are Intense, So Prepare Yourselves
Well, it’s finally happened. The day I’ve was dreading arrived. After two years, 11 months and three days; after pregnancy, breastfeeding and extended breastfeeding, the day of reckoning was upon me: I got my first post-baby period. Yes, I was without it for way longer than the average new mother and I should be grateful. Yes, having a period is a healthy, normal thing for women to do. But guess what? I’m having a lot of feelings about this bloody situation. And all of these feelings are bad.
We Shopped Through These 9 Mom-Targeted Facebook Ads so You Didn’t Have To
As parents, we are always looking for that perfect product that’s going to make our lives easier. But, ironically – because we’re parents – we have zero time to search for said perfect product. What we apparently do seem to have time to spend hours on a day? Facebook. Smart companies know this and are happy to target the hell out of us while we’re reposting memes and liking baby pictures.
23 Breastfeeding Injuries That Every Nursing Mom Recognizes
There is nothing as elemental as holding your sweet baby in your arms while they gaze trustingly up at you. Then there are the moments when they bite your nipple, pinch your arm, and attempt to pry open your mouth with their hands, before barrel-rolling out of your arms like a little tornado. Remembering the quiet moments spent rocking and nursing my babes to sleep still warms my heart. I can honestly say that it has been my favorite thing about parenthood.
My Husband Is A Better Stay-at-Home Mom Than I Could Ever Be
The happiest time of my life was the two years I spent as a stay-at-home mom. I was my son Harvey's primary caregiver from the day he was born to age 2. I put him down for naps and read him his first books. I nursed him through colds and teething pain. I lived for playdates and baby classes. As stay-at-home moms went, I felt like one of the best, and I loved it. But when my husband confessed that his day job was killing him and he needed a change, I knew that going back to work was the only answer.
I Drove Myself Crazy Trying to Be the Best at Attachment Parenting
When I got pregnant, my husband and I decided to be huge hippies about it. For nine months we studied attachment parenting, took holistic parenting classes, and purchased natural versions of every baby product available to make our vision come true. We were going to be the best parents ever. Our all-natural lifestyle started – of course – with an all-natural birth.
Reasons That Lady Is Crying in Whole Foods
There is a 25-minute wait before the rotisserie chickens are done. Her husband is in grad school for screenwriting. The avocados are no longer on sale. She took a BuzzFeed quiz that correctly guessed her age. There are no container tops at the salad bar. She forgot to take her Celexa but remembered to take her stool softeners. Something Trump-related, probably. The guilt about buying pre-made food instead of making a hearty, home-cooked meal is getting to her. She’s worrying about Richard Simmons.
No, You're Not “Doing It Wrong" - Breastfeeding Just Hurts
Let me just start off by saying, I am really into breastfeeding. I’m a breastsleeper, an extended breastfeeder, and a public breastfeeder – breastfeeding cover not required. I still pump at work two times a day so my 17 month old can have all the breast milk she wants, anytime she wants it. Breastfeeding works for me and it works/worked for both of my kids. I am a huge fan of breastfeeding. But guess what? Breastfeeding was super painful for me for the first few weeks.
I Refuse to Believe That Your Baby Sleeps in a Crib
Hey, other parents? I need you to all stop lying to me about how your kids sleep in cribs. It’s really not cool. I get that, as parents, we have to lie about some things just to get through the day – that little Johnny has never bitten anyone before he bit my kid, for example. But this crib thing has got to stop. It is total nonsense, and you all know it. Sure, I’ve seen babies sleeping in cribs on TV and in glossy magazine ads.

Co-Sleeping Is Killing My Body, But I Still Won't Give It Up
My lower back burns. My shoulders are rocks. My spine is a rod of pain. My hips feel “tight,” but “tight” doesn’t even begin to describe how they actually feel — “twisted rods of pain” is more accurate. If a normal person woke up feeling this way, they would check themselves into urgent care. But being in total physical pain is my normal, everyday status. Why? Because I co-sleep with my toddler and this is simply how my body feels now.
7 "Weird Al" Yankovic Songs That Are Secretly About Parenting
I used to think “Weird Al” songs were just funny. But now that I’m a parent, many of my favorite lyrics speak to me on a deeper level. In fact, “Weird Al” seems to have written a song about almost every parental hardship, from the struggle to feed my kids a healthy meal to my total lack of a functional brain.
This is Why I Hate Going to the Beach With My Kids
All right, kids! Here we are at the beach! Who’s excit… no, four-year-old. This is not the beach. This is a parking lot next to the beach. The beach is just a short walk away. Please stop crying. We have not driven 45 minutes to hang out in a hot parking lot‌I promise.
Study: Eating More Fiber May End Peanut Allergies
Having a child with a peanut allergy can make life pretty tricky, if not downright terrifying. While most daycares, preschools, and play spaces ban peanut butter sandwiches and snacks, parents of peanut allergy sufferers have to stay constantly vigilant to avoid serious trips to the ER. To make matters worse, more and more children are developing peanut allergies, with rates tripling between 1997 and 2008.
17 Sure-fire Ways to Wake a Sleeping Baby
As all new parents know, the main problem with babies is that they sleep too darn much. They snooze through the night when you want to stay up playing. They doze off every two hours for naps that last the whole morning or afternoon. In short, babies leave new parents with far too much time on their hands. Happily, there are many ways that you can wake up your over-sleeping babies safely and easily.
A Letter of Apology to Baby Number Two
Let’s get this out of the way: I really love you. Just because you’re my second child doesn’t mean my feelings are in any way diminished. And I’m doing a lot of the things the same way as when I was pregnant with your big brother. Tracking your growth via fruits and vegetables on an iPhone app, for example. I also gave up coffee (and once you know me, you’ll know how hard that was), unpasteurized cheeses, and deli meat. Rest assured, your mom is watching out for you.
One Day of Maternity Leave in a Tiny Apartment
Baby Mabel and I wake up in the big bedroom, formerly the living room. I change her diaper and open the door. The cat and dog stroll in and take their places on the changing table and bed, respectively. Carrying the baby, I walk into three-year-old Harvey’s room, formerly the big bedroom. We find my husband and Harvey watching videos quietly. We all greet each other and the adults inquire about sleep quality and length. Mabel was up three times but slept til 8. Harvey was up once but slept til 6:30.
14 wearable devices we'd totally buy (if they were real)
Wearable tech is having a moment. From the humble beginnings of the Apple Watch and Fitbit to these awe-inspiring, phone-charging pants, there are products to fit just about every need we might have. But has wearable tech gone far enough? Absolutely not! We will not rest until each and every one of our daily necessities are digitally monitored and/or tended to. The following is a wish list—nay, requirement list—of wearable tech we expect to see in the future.
This might be the most cringeworthy soccer fail video ever
|
You've probably seen your fair share of impressive soccer goal videos, but now it's time to see one that's just embarrassing. During this soccer match in Cyprus, two defenders screwed up in truly epic style. As both of them reached out to stop the ball, they wound up crashing into each other and scoring a two-man own goal. This fumble is probably going to haunt them for the rest of their careers. The next time you screw up at work, think of this video.

Former NASA engineer shows you a better way to cut up a watermelon
|
We may have been cutting our watermelon wrong this whole time. Former NASA engineer Mark Rober, who has been posting food hacks like watermelon smoothies to his YouTube channel for some time, presented a new way to cut up watermelon just in time for Labor Day. It’s more work than you're probably used to, but it’ll give you better watermelon, too. It's also pretty easy. Instead of cutting through the watermelon, you’ll need to cut around it to get rid of the rinds and the edges that come with them.

Super Mario Maker blends creativity and community for the ultimate Nintendo experience
Imagine that your television set is a canvas, and that your Wii U GamePad is a palette loaded up with every course element you’ve ever seen in a Super Mario Bros. game. Super Mario Maker is what happens when Nintendo hands you the whole course element supply cabinet and says, “Go build something,” and then invites you to share with other players the fruits of your labor. Super Mario Maker is a construction tool bundled with the kind of online community Nintendo fans have always wanted.
Someone is making mashups of Kanye West's VMAs dance and different kinds of music
|
When The Weeknd rocked his single "Can't Feel My Face" at the VMAs, Kanye West couldn't help himself. He got out of his seat and danced like he was witnessing Michael Jackson break out the moonwalk for the first time in 1983. Because this is the Internet, the Twitter account @kanye_dancing immediately popped up to show West dancing to things other than The Weeknd—things that he might not consider dancing to in real life. Here's him grooving to Panic at the Disco. And his old VMAs nemesis...

We can all just pretend that this Boba Fett movie trailer is real
|
We don't know if there will ever be a Boba Fett movie, but Star Wars fans remain eager to see more of their favorite Mandalorian bounty hunter. Director Eric Demeusy created this simple but brilliant Boba Fett film trailer using a combination of original footage and audio from Return of the Jedi. It calls back to the opening desert scene in the first Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer, and it gives a plausibly good look at what a Boba Fett spinoff film might actually look like.

YouTube has rediscovered early 3D animation-and it's horrifying
|
It’s strange to think that in 2015, Super Nintendo games look better than ever, thanks to a strange compression of what you and I would consider vintage. Everything in pop culture is on a different time table. Old things get ugly, then they get ironic, then they get cool. The 2001 Toyota Corolla is an indisputably hideous car. But the 1973 Toyota Corolla? Not bad! It’s such a unique cycle of disgust and appreciation.

Here's the trailer for the second live-action 'Attack on Titan' film
|
The trailer for the second Attack on Titan movie looks metal as hell, although it might not be the most accurate adaptation of the manga. The first of the two live-action Attack on Titan adaptations was released earlier this year, to not-so-great reviews. The second, subtitled "End of the World," looks like it may well be more of the same—which isn't a huge surprise, because the two movies were filmed back-to-back.

Amazon Prime adds another notch to its belt with offline video
The standard response we hear, when somebody's asked why they subscribe to Amazon Prime, is "Ugh... it pays for itself with the shipping discounts." It must frustrate Amazon when Netflix continues to dominate the streaming market, all the while tweets like these continue: But Amazon is doing great stuff with Prime—and now it's added offline video to Prime's ever-growing list of features, which is something that Netflix stated, last December, was "never going to happen" on its service.
MTV's 'Todrick' gives fans a behind-the-scenes look at YouTube success
Todrick Hall is willing to break the law to make his dreams come true. And in the premiere episode of his new MTV series, Todrick, Hall proves it. Shooting on location in Los Angeles, he decides to head outside and film, permits be damned. He tells his crew to keep going no matter what, and when several security guards walk in and tell them to stop filming, the whole cast just keeps dancing through the frame. They have to get the shot, and, for Hall, that’s just par for the course.
New video looks back on the game-changing legacy of Konami's Metal Gear
The Metal Gear series has been around since 1987 and has affected countless fans. Konami on Tuesday uploaded a video showing creator Hideo Kojima talk to developers, journalists, and visiting the home of one particular fan to show just how impactful the series is. It’s hard to imagine what video games would be like without Metal Gear. Which makes it all the more sad that Kojima is leaving the series not on the best terms. There has been quite the hullabaloo between Kojima and Konami.
For the first time, CBS will livestream regular-season NFL games
|
When the Bills and Jaguars face off in London in Week 7 of the NFL season, it won't be shown on a national TV broadcast. The only way that any NFL fan who doesn't live in the Buffalo or Jacksonville areas can watch is to stream it online via Yahoo. It's the first time in history that an NFL game will be only available nationally via livestream, but it's not the only regular-season game this year that fans can watch live online.

Blue whale interrupts a BBC interview, unrepentant joy ensues
It's generally bad etiquette to interrupt a live television interview, but these rules go completely out the window if you happen to be a blue whale. If you're a blue whale, that means you're an endangered species, and it'd make anyone's day extremely grand if you stopped by to interrupt them.
Biologists join hilarious Twitter rant about nonsensical common animal names
Biologists are a cheeky lot, and their latest Twitter joke is a doozy. They're making fun of animals with nonsensical common names. Common names are exactly what they sound like: The names of animals people are more familiar with, different from their scientific or species name. For example, a cat's common name is a cat, obviously. Its scientific name is Felis catus. Only sometimes the names we call creatures are pretty silly.
TeePee returns to Twitch
A Call of Duty pro player is now streaming on Twitch. That may not sound like news, but after a move by Major League Gaming (MLG) and its streaming platform MLG.tv to corner the game’s live video market last year, it could be an important shift in the landscape. Especially considering the player. Tyler “TeePee” Polchow, a pro player for TCM Gaming, revealed today he’d now be streaming on Twitch after his exclusive contract with MLG.tv recently expired.
'Inside Amy Schumer' writer Kurt Metzger harasses Twitter personality @literalporn
