Granddaughter of Herscher residents wins International Cheer Union gold medal

Zianna Schneider, granddaughter of four Herscher grandparents, has won a gold medal as a member of world championship team at the International Cheer Union competition. Zianna, 15, was one of 24 athletes competing for the American team in the 12-15-year-old division. The Americans finished ahead of teams from Mexico, Germany, Norway, Finland, the Philippines, Sweden, Chile, Australia and China to win the gold.

Kankakee Deputy Chief Austin shares stories of sacrifice, service for Memorial Day

For Donell Austin, Memorial Day has a very personal meaning. Austin, the Deputy Police Chief for Kankakee, was the keynote speaker Saturday for the Memorial Day weekend services at the Ray Olley statue south of Kankakee at 2150 US 45, in front of A.N. Webber. The statue honors the life of local World War II U.S. Navy vet Ray Olley and is designed to bring attention to the problem of PTSD.

99-year-old St. Anne man served in World War II

Virgil Foster is one of the last of his generation. Foster, 99, a resident of St. Anne, is a World War II veteran. He enlisted in the Navy Nov. 16, 1944. Trained in Rhode Island, he was shipped by railroad across the country to California. The shooting was over by the time the Navy sent him to Guam, a Pacific island. Once there he served with the SeaBees, a branch of the Navy that worked as a Construction Battalion. The SeaBee motto was “We build.
