Net carbon losses in Central African forests revealed by high-resolution biomass change maps
Abstract Dense humid forests in Central Africa hold vast biomass carbon stocks but are increasingly affected by small-scale disturbances that are difficult to detect with current satellite observations. Here, we generate 10 m canopy height maps for 2019–2022 using deep learning with spaceborne lidar and Sentinel-1/−2 imagery, and derive aboveground biomass changes at 30 m resolution. The maps reveal widespread small disturbance patches, 87% smaller than 1 ha.

Monitoring tropical forests with light drones: ensuring spatial and temporal consistency in stereophotogrammetric products
Abstract Light drones provide a cheap and effective tool to monitor forest canopy, especially in tropical and equatorial contexts, where infrastructure and resources are limiting. In these regions, good quality optical satellite images are rare, yet the stakes are maximal to characterize forest function, dynamics, diversity, and phenology, and more generally the vegetation-climate interplay.
Measuring the invisible: The tough job of calculating the carbon stocks and fluxes of a forest Original
"Green lungs" is the term often used to describe rainforests due to their ability to use photosynthesis to capture CO2, the planet's primary greenhouse gas. That makes them a key component of global climate regulation, and their preservation represents a major issue for decision-makers and citizens alike. But calculating how much carbon such forests store and the flows they represent into the planet's overall greenhouse gas balance is no easy feat.

Spatial validation reveals poor predictive performance of large-scale ecological mapping models
Abstract Mapping aboveground forest biomass is central for assessing the global carbon balance. However, current large-scale maps show strong disparities, despite good validation statistics of their underlying models. Here, we attribute this contradiction to a flaw in the validation methods, which ignore spatial autocorrelation (SAC) in data, leading to overoptimistic assessment of model predictive power.
Leveraging Signatures of Plant Functional Strategies in Wood Density Profiles of African Trees to Correct Mass Estimations From Terrestrial Laser Data
Abstract Wood density (WD) relates to important tree functions such as stem mechanics and resistance against pathogens. This functional trait can exhibit high intraindividual variability both radially and vertically. With the rise of LiDAR-based methodologies allowing nondestructive tree volume estimations, failing to account for WD variations related to tree function and biomass investment strategies may lead to large systematic bias in AGB estimations.
