Jimmy Carter made enemies, then peace. Ask Ford, Kennedy, Clinton.
During the bruising 1976 presidential campaign, Jimmy Carter called President Gerald Ford "incompetent" and his policies "morally and politically and intellectually bankrupt." But after Carter, a Democrat, unseated the Republican incumbent in a close race, he praised Ford in his inaugural address: "For myself and for our nation, I want to thank my predecessor for all he has done to heal our land." Carter's gracious words prompted a standing ovation for his recent rival.
As Jimmy Carter nears 100, he is buoyed by Harris’s run for president
Former president Jimmy Carter, 99, turned to his son several weeks ago as he watched President Joe Biden, 81, announce that he was passing the torch to a younger generation. “That’s sad,” Carter said softly. Carter and Biden are friends and share much in common as members of the elite group elected to the White House. Biden is the oldest to ever serve, and Carter has lived longer than any other former president. Neither went to Harvard or Yale.
Review | Mary Trump returns with more stories of her family’s deep dysfunction
Review by Mary Jordan September 8, 2024 at 7:00 a.m. EDT Donald Trump has called Kamala Harris “real garbage,” “a wack job,” and even reposted a crude slur to millions of his followers that a certain sex act may have boosted her political career. Trump’s crass and demeaning remarks about his enemies — calling them pigs, ugly, fat and losers — is rooted in his upbringing, according to his niece Mary L.

Jimmy Carter could become first president alive for his 100th birthday
Jimmy Carter is within sight of making history yet again. Sunday marks 100 days until Carter would become the first president to witness his own 100th birthday. Statistically, Americans have a less than one percent chance of living to 100. And Carter faces particularly significant challenges in reaching the milestone. For the past 16 months, he’s been in hospice, end-of-life care that focuses on comfort and foregoes medical intervention.

Comment Save As five first ladies gathered Tuesday at an Atlanta church before a service to honor the life of Rosalynn Carter, one stood out in the crowd. The final hours of Rosalynn Carter’s life, in the town where it began
Comment Save As Rosalynn Carter’s health steadily faded Saturday night, her husband, Jimmy Carter, sat beside her bed in his wheelchair. At 96, she had an infection that had not improved with antibiotics. The day before, she had entered hospice in her home and her caregivers shifted from trying to prolong life to making her last days more comfortable. “My Dad told her he loved her and thanked her for all the wonderful things she had done,” said James E.
With Rosalynn’s passing, Jimmy Carter faces life alone
Comment Save When Rosalynn Carter was 90, she was wheeled into an operating room in an Atlanta hospital for major surgery. The surgeon warned Jimmy Carter that his wife’s advanced age made the operation to remove a large part of her colon dangerous. It was 2018 and the former president, then 93, sat awake all night praying in the hospital. At dawn, after learning Rosalynn had survived, Jimmy dialed his grandson.

Buckingham Palace: Coronation backdrop, tourist attraction, unloved home
LONDON — After all the coronation celebrations, after they travel from Westminster Abbey to Buckingham Palace in a golden carriage, after they wave to the crowds from the palace balcony and watch Armed Forces jets fly past, King Charles III and Camilla, the Queen Consort, will go home. Buckingham Palace remains the official London residence of the British monarch. But it is not the actual London residence of this monarch.
How rich is King Charles? Coronation prompts scrutiny of royal wealth.
Historically, all this projected the power of the British monarchy. The elaborate coronation rituals still help legitimize the royal transition - and sell the royal brand. But the glitzy celebration, expected to cost British taxpayers tens of millions of pounds, may also highlight a liability for Charles. With a new king has come renewed scrutiny of the wealth of the royal family and heightened skepticism about how much the public should be subsidizing it.

As Elon Musk expands his reach, Washington worries
As Musk, 51, inserts himself into volatile geopolitical issues, many Washington policymakers worry from the sidelines as he bypasses them. Queen Elizabeth II's funeral was a farewell production for the ages
The streets along the procession routes were jammed with crowds, but the far bigger audience was watching on TV around the world. Many analysts said the funeral could turn out to be the most watched single TV event in history, with a large portion of the 7.7 billion people around the globe catching at least some of it. Those who have been planning this for decades clearly had that audience in mind. An estimated 650 million people watched the first moon landing in 1969, a record at that time.

LONDON - Queen Elizabeth II's funeral on Monday will be attended by more than 70 heads of government from around the world and poses the city's biggest security challenge for Britain since World War II. Presidents, prime ministers, kings and queens arriving from overseas add to the risk.

Her body washed ashore in Connecticut. The search for her family began.
NEW LONDON, Conn. - On a warm morning in August 2018, a woman's body floated toward the main downtown dock in this small New England seaport. Police saw no signs of trauma. She appeared to have drowned. The strap of her backpack had been wound eight times around her right wrist. Inside, police found a Massachusetts driver's license and a Chinese passport that identified her as An Shun Jin, 56.
Her body washed ashore in Connecticut. The search for her family began.
The only thing clear to police was it wouldn't be easy to find the mystery woman's family. If they could not, she would be yet another of the United States' growing number of unclaimed bodies. There is no national count of how many lives end this way, but a Washington Post investigation that included interviews with more than 100 local officials from Hawaii to Maine who handle uncollected bodies found there are tens of thousands a year.

The reason: Four people were murdered there. The killings of three members of the Savopoulos family and their housekeeper turned their desirable address into one of the country's "stigmatized properties." The National Association of Realtorsdefines stigmatized properties as those that have been "psychologically impacted" by murder or other crime, or by events "suspected to have occurred" - including "alleged hauntings." Many people don't want their dream home to have a sad or spooky past.

A police officer, checking on a worrying smell, opened his door and found Ryan facedown on his living room floor, another Vietnam veteran who died alone. There is no requirement for local governments - who are responsible for unclaimed bodies - to report them to any national authority, so there is no official count. But tens of thousands of lives in the United States end this way each year, according to a Washington Post investigation that included more than 100 interviews over six months with medical examiners and local officials from Maine to California.

Biden administration to launch massive funeral assistance program for covid victims
The Biden administration next week will launch a funeral assistance program that will provide up to $9,000 to cover the burial costs of each American who died of covid-19 — the largest program of its type ever offered by the federal government. The program is open to families regardless of their income, as long as they show documentation and have not already received similar benefits through another program.
Ashes in the mail: Dealing with the loss a loved one has changed in the covid era
The pandemic that has changed the rhythms and rituals of life is doing that in death, too. Eulogies are delivered over Zoom. Memorial services are often held months late, if at all. More people are opting for cremation, accelerating the shift from burying bodies. And, with out-of-state relatives unable to travel to pick up the cremated remains because of health risks, the U.S. Postal Service is increasingly delivering ashes to doorsteps.

In her final days as first lady, Melania Trump has largely stayed away from the West Wing. While her husband spends his time there in anger — though aides said his dark mood has lightened since he began planning a rousing military send-off for himself — she has shown no sign of any disappointment for how the president’s era is ending.
People are making bets on whether Melania Trump will divorce Donald Trump. But that might be a bad bet.
Bookies started taking bets on Election Day as gamblers considered a question on many people’s minds: Will Melania Trump dump her husband when he is no longer president?
