1 Introduction Although the number of new opioid prescriptions continues to decline, according to the CDC (https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nhsr/nhsr162-508.pdf), as of 2019, about 22.1% of US adults with chronic pain used opioids in the past 3 months, and nearly 100,000 people have a fatal overdose involving prescription opioids per year [1] Among patients whose first opioid prescription is for eight or more days, about 3% are utilizing opioids for one year or more [2, 3].
