Rae Daniel’s Biography

Hello! My name is Rae Daniel and I am a graduate student studying Journalism and Public Affairs at American University. I recently graduated from Louisiana State University where I received my Masters in Higher Education – Student Affairs. During my time at LSU, I was the Graduate Residence Director working with LSU’s Residential Life. I have worked in Residential Life for five years and really enjoy working with students and helping them transition into their college career. I mainly worked with first year students and I must say that working in ResLife has given me patience, tons of laughter, close friends turned into family, and stories through the roof. Within my Higher Ed program I have met some of the most intelligent people I’ve come into contact with and am excited to carry those conversations over into the journalism field.

I received my Bachelors in Broadcast Journalism and Spanish from Western Kentucky University where I anchored and reported for the student newscast, NewsChannel12. In the Summer of 2010 I had an opportunity of a lifetime to study abroad in Ecuador and it was one of the most eye-opening experiences I had in my life. After going on this trip, I had a clearer thought about what exactly I wanted to do with journalism in the long run. I want to be able to grant people the access of experiencing and seeing issues that have been in the dark, and voices that have been silenced.

I am a huge advocate for social justice initiatives and thinking of ways in which we can make this world a little bit smaller. I enjoy being introduced to different cultures, traditions and beliefs because it not only gives me an opportunity to learn about others in today’s world, but an excuse to meet new people, try new foods and travel the world. Being diverse is one thing, but really stepping outside of the box and learning the difference between tolerance and acceptance, is very different. To me it is really important how we as a society can come together and learn how to accept one another’s differences.

In my spare time, I love to go and explore the city that I’m in, whether it is a festival, museum, or special event going on. I also love playing football and golf — and am a huge Cincinnati fan – Reds and the Bengals (Who Dey!).
