Sleep Staging Is Not Guesswork
I hold a PhD in neuroscience and have spent 13 years in sleep research. Before joining Oura, I was a postdoctoral researcher at UC Berkeley where I built an open-source algorithm that scores sleep stages from polysomnography. It was published in a top-tier journal and is now among the most widely used and cited automated sleep staging tools in the field. Since 2020, I have been the lead algorithm scientist for sleep tracking at Oura.
New Research Analyzes Jet Lag and Sleep Patterns From 1.5 Million Nights of Oura Data
As global travel becomes a routine part of modern life, so too does the experience of jet lag. Even though jet lag is a familiar nuisance for frequent flyers, “most research to date has relied on small samples or lab-based studies, leaving a gap in understanding of how travel affects everyday people in real-world settings,” says Dr. Raphael Vallat, study researcher and Staff Machine Learning Scientist at Oura. A new large-scale study published in Sleep dives deeper.

How people wake up is associated with previous night’s sleep together with physical activity and food intake - Nature Communications
Abstract How people wake up and regain alertness in the hours after sleep is related to how they are sleeping, eating, and exercising.
Sleep loss leads to the withdrawal of human helping across individuals, groups, and large-scale societies
Online donations database (Study 3) Donation data and analysis. Study 3 tested the prediction that the loss of 1 h of sleep opportunity (due to DST) resulted in a real-world, large-scale decrease in helping behavior. Data were obtained from an online database of donations made between the years 2001 to 2016 in the US, via the DonorsChoose website, a platform that helps raise funds for school projects in the US (e.g., buy books, get supplies for a science project).
High dream recall frequency
Introduction While dreaming has long been equated with rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, it is now well established that dreaming can occur in any sleep stage and is therefore not exclusive to a specific global vigilance state.1–3 As of today, no (neuro)physiological correlates of dreaming are known, which means that one cannot know for sure whether someone is actually dreaming or not at a specific moment of sleep.

Sleep and dream habits in a sample of French college students who report no sleep disorders
There is a lack of up‐to‐date data on sleep and dream habits of college students. To fill in this gap, we used an online questionnaire sent to the student mailing lists of two major universities of Lyon (Lyon 1 and Lyon 2) for the recruitment of an functional magnetic resonance imaging study with sleep disorders as exclusion criteria.
