Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

It was a full-time internship at the Manhattan Spirit and Our Town, where I covered a wide variety of stories in Manhattan. I loved it.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes.

How is social media changing news?

It's allowing users to engage much more with news, while providing news organizations with instant feedback from readers/users.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Murphy Brown

What does it mean to be a journalist?

To be insatiably curious.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Computer, phone, my wit.

What's your favorite social network?

Facebook

Who do you wish followed you?

Oprah Winfrey

Why did you become a journalist?

To expose wrongs, to hold perpetrators accountable, and to learn more about the world.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Yes, I was a writer.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

I received one with two typos that created other words; the worst of which was "peaked" instead of "piqued."

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That I cover every meeting taking place in the U.S., rather than the business of planning meetings.
