Darkology: Blackface and the American Way of Entertainment
The music that I play and often write about, old-time music, was the most popular music in the United States from the early 19th century until World War II. The Grand Ole Opry started with that music. It was played by Americans of all ethnicities. But there is a very dark side to that music, too, some of which is revealed in the N-word in titles and lyrics and other features. Sometimes, people change the tune names or lyrics; sometimes, they just decline to play them.
Labor: One Woman’s Work
Mary Fariba Afsari. Avid Reader, $28.99 (288p) ISBN 978-1-6680-1540-7 Medical memoirs don’t come much more moving than this account of Afsari’s life as an OB-GYN. The author’s father, an Iranian immigrant, cared for victims of the AIDS epidemic in 1980s and ’90s California. Inspired by his work, Afsari became a doctor, too, but grew disillusioned with American healthcare bureaucracy.
Famesick: A Memoir
Lena Dunham. Random House, $32 (416p) ISBN 978-0-593-12932-6 In this frank account, Girls cocreator Dunham (Not That Kind of Girl) takes an unsparing look at the physical and emotional costs of her first decade in the spotlight. Pre-Girls chapters hum with the energy of a downtown N.Y.C. memoir, with Dunham furiously writing scripts, casually collaborating with the pre-fame Safdie brothers, and having questionable sex.
