Byron shines at national karate comp

By Richard Light On Sunday, the Byron Bay JWK Karate Club tasted success in round one of the Queensland AMAC (Australian Martial Arts Competition) at Nerang. Competing in his first karate tournament, Robert Boyle took second  place in the beginners Kata. Overcoming the nerves associated with his first comp, he performed Chi No Kata well enough to come home with silver. This was followed by Anthony Dihn, winning two sliver medals. He won the Advanced Freestyle Sparring and Contact Points Sparring.

Canning takes silver at Qld Karate Championships

Byron had two qualifiers for the Qld state championships, but with Anthony Dinh competing in Japan, Sam Canning stepped up for the Byron Bay Jin Wu Koon Karate dojo at the AMAC Queensland Karate Championships in Nerang. Sam won silver in the Veterans Points Sparring event. He placed fourth in the Veterans and Open Kata events but made it to the final of the Veterans Points Sparring. With both finalists even when time ran out, it went into extra time.

Canning and Dinh clean up at karate tournament

Two members of the Byron Bay Jin Wu Koon Karate club came home from the Australian Martial Arts Championships (AMAC) round two tournament, held in Nerang, with an impressive haul of medals and trophies. After recently being graded to Shodan (first Dan black belt), Sam Canning took the gold medal for the veterans’ freestyle sparring, coming third in the veterans kata.
