サハラ以南のアフリカでは長年にわたり、蚊が媒介する感染症であるマラリアの主要な治療薬として、アルテミシニン系複合薬の「アルテメテル・ルメファントリン」が広く使われている。ところが近年、この薬剤に対するマラリア原虫の感受性の低下が懸念されており、原因となる遺伝的要因の解明が急務とされてきた。 そこでブラウン大学を中心とする研究チームは、2016年から2024年にウガンダで採取された検体から選んだ157検体のマラリア原虫の全ゲノム解析を実施し、薬剤への感受性低下に関わる遺伝子領域を探索した。その結果、これまであまり注目されてこなかった「px1」という遺伝子に、強い自然選択（生存に有利な変異が急速に広まる現象）の痕跡が見つかった。 「マラリアはいまも、特にサハラ以南のアフリカにおいて主要な死因のひとつです」と、ブラウン大学の准教授で病理学が専門のジェフリー・ベイリーは説明する。「今後も薬剤耐性が出現し続ければ、感染拡大の抑制が難しくなり、地域内外で多くの住民が犠牲になる可能性が懸念されます」 急速に広まった変異のかたまり...

A rapidly strengthening El Niño could have consequences far beyond the Pacific, including for the Middle East. Characterised by warmer-than-normal sea-surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific, El Niño occurs every few years. When the heat stored in the ocean is released into the atmosphere, it triggers a chain reaction affecting rainfall, temperatures and hurricane activity around the world.
