We are now only a year away from the 250th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. Innovative Learning in Action: Tates Creek High School Students Tackle Sustainability Through Civic Engagement

Under the leadership of Cathy Sammons, an educator in the Kentucky Innovative Teacher Fellowship, 10th-grade students are exploring sustainability not just as a science concept, but as a civic responsibility.
My people voted for Trump, but I see firsthand the human cost of government cuts | Opinion
President Trump's plan to eliminate the Department of Education will negatively impact vulnerable communities. The most important work to be done is in local communities, not at the federal level. We must engage in respectful dialogue with people who hold differing political views. The greatest threat to our democracy is the erosion of our ability to see our neighbors as fellow citizens.
OTHER VIEWS: New measles cases should be a wake-up call
We would hope, if nothing else, the outbreak of measles in Texas and New Mexico would help to highlight the importance of childhood immunizations. Two cases were confirmed in Oklahoma by the Oklahoma State Department of Health, though the agency says it is not a risk to the public. It would be helpful if the OSDH would supply more rudimentary information like locations and ages of the infected, but that isn’t the biggest issue at the moment.

Shaking up state school board a good idea
By Rob Collins When we think about our governing public boards like city councils, county commissions and boards of educations, we don't usually expect members to be in lock-step with every other member of the board. We expect them to be able to work things out, but they should be able to bring varied viewpoints into the meeting. That's more representative of the communities they serve. If there's conflict, that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Oklahoma foster parents would receive a bit more help from the state if a bill to increase reimbursement payments makes it into law. House Bill 2030 would increase the state’s maintenance payments to foster care parents by $5 a day, or at least $140 a month. These payments help families cover the cost of caring for a foster child, including food, clothing, school supplies, personal incidentals and reasonable travel, according to Oklahoma Voice.

Terry Bradshaw speaks on Patrick Mahomes' legacy ahead of SB LIX
NEW ORLEANS — With a win on Sunday in Super Bowl LIX, Patrick Mahomes would continue to cement himself as one of the greatest quarterbacks ever to play the game, and the Chiefs as one of the greatest teams. At just 29 years old, Mahomes already has three Super Bowl rings and could add a fourth on Sunday, which would tie NFL legends like Terry Bradshaw and Joe Montana. Winning four Super Bowls before turning 30 is unheard of in the NFL.

EDITORIAL: Can we take a 'little pain'?
President Donald Trump is right about trade deficits in one regard. The United States operates on a lot of trade deficits. Whether or not the USA has been getting “ripped off” for decades might be based on how you look at it or, more specifically, how it affects us as individual buyers and sellers of goods. Because, yes, America has rare abilities to provide things other countries can’t make themselves — like petroleum products or things that require a high degree of technology.

EDITORIAL: Leglslature must look at how much autonomy OTA has
In days of yore, building a turnpike meant paying a toll on the road until we paid back the cost of that construction. That’s not the case anymore. In fact, there isn’t much residents can do when the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority either decides to raise tolls or build new turnpikes in disputed areas. Folks in Norman provided a pretty good example. They didn’t want to be part of the turnpike expansion efforts, they fought it, even took the OTA to court, but have not succeeded in their protests.
EDITORIAL: Schools might lose chance to draft local cellphone policy
School districts could be running out of time to determine individual cellphone policies. Currently, state laws do not prevent cellphone use in the classroom, but the state government is getting closer to taking those decisions away from local schools. Last year, Gov. Kevin Stitt issued a challenge to superintendents to find ways to limit cellphone use in schools. He said he believed local control should be at the heart of the policy.

A mission from God: Trump promises sweeping changes
President Donald Trump is a unique orator. Addressing a crowd with little form or structure he might be prone to stream-of-consciousness rambling, but in the cases where he can hit highlights and draw between the lines, he can give a rousing speech. Trump provided the latter with fervor and vigor not long after being sworn in as the 47th president of the United States.
