Why 2024 is set to be a pivotal year in cybersecurity Original
With 2024 fast approaching, it’s becoming increasingly evident next year will be a pivotal one in cybersecurity, against the backdrop of continued high-profile attacks and the roll out of the government’s new 2023-2030 Australian Cyber Security Strategy.
Op-ed: Ransomware and extortion attempts show no signs of slowing down
Ransomware groups, advanced persistent threats (APTs), and commodity attackers continue to compromise global businesses at scale, showing no signs of abating. Just last month, the ALPHV (Black Cat) ransomware group struck TissuPath, a Melbourne-based pathology firm, capturing patient records and threatening to publish the stolen data within 48 hours if the ransom payment was not made.
The 2023 Ultimate Guide to Ransomware
Overview Ransomware is malware designed to virtually mimic the age-old crime of capturing items of value and demanding money for their safe return. Ransomware typically arrives via email or a backdoor, locks up valuable computer files, and is followed by a demand for compensation, often in Bitcoin or another cryptocurrency. The hacker promises a decryption tool on payment of the ransom – but there is never any guarantee of delivery or efficacy of the decryption tool.
Building resilience in a persistently elevated threat climate
Recently, cyber security has posed quite a challenge for Australians, with high-profile cyber breaches exposing sensitive information to as many as 14 million people. Aside from the media scrutiny, the scale of the damage caused by these attacks has seen the Australian government fast forward plans to overhaul cyber security laws in an effort to strengthen our security posture and better prepare our nation to withstand future attacks.
What am I walking into? How to prepare for your first CISO role
Starting a new role is an exciting time where you can ease yourself into the job, take time to get to know your colleagues and work out the systems and processes, right? Well, it’s unlikely to be that easy if you are taking on the role of Chief Information Security Officer (CISO). With an average tenure of fewer than two years, there’s precious little time for a CISO to make an impact.

Will 2023 be a pivot year for cybersecurity? Original
The past 12 months have once again been a challenging time for everyone in and around cybersecurity. Unlike previous years, it felt very different, with a continuous stream of attacks. In the past, mega vulnerabilities happened once a quarter, but this past year we've been dealing with critical vulnerabilities almost weekly in some cases. The time to known exploitation continues to shorten, leaving organisations with less time to patch their systems and prepare for exploits against vulnerabilities.
