Could Blue States Revive Nullification? Original
There is little question that Democrats are in the midst of rediscovering the benefits of federalism. In the weeks after the seismic shock of the 2024 election, The Atlantic’s Franklin Foer found blue state governors and policy wonks busy framing “a new progressive vision of federalism” that could move their priorities forward despite the defeat.

Robert Elder's Guide To GNU Coreutils
Over the last 18 months, I've taken the time to create 108 short YouTube videos that summarize all of the commands that are found in the Coreutils Package. These videos focus mostly on Coreutils v8.3, but also included are a few commands from v9.0 as well. For each of the blog posts, I've adapted and modified the script slightly to make it more appropriate for written format.

Imaging A Hard Drive With non-ECC Memory - What Could Go Wrong?
I recently came home to visit with family, but right now as I write this, it's 1:00am and I'm running memtest86+ by myself in the basement. The purpose of this article, is to provide a real-life case study to show why ECC memory is not a waste of money, and to provide a detailed account of how much time you can waste when bit flips become a part of you daily computing life.

Should I use Signed or Unsigned Ints In C? (Part 1)
To sign or not to sign, that is the question. - Shakespeare When I first wrote this article I didn't think many people would ever read it, but it turned out that it was submitted to 3 different subreddits and hackernews, generating 320 comments and 17, 986 unique page views over a few days. It looks like the majority of people don't agree with my conclusion, and you can read their comments at the links below.
Into the Whirlpool: Is Secession a Solution to Our Woes?
This essay first appeared in Local Culture 4.1, where it was published alongside responses by Allan Carlson, Jeff Polet, and Michael P. Federici. Woodway, TX. Surveying the growth of separatism in the United States from a front row seat as a professor at South Carolina College in the 1840s, the German-born political philosopher Francis Lieber was haunted by his sense that history was repeating itself.
Semiconductors Are More Than Just Processors & GPUs. A Lot More.
2022-03-03 - By Robert Elder If you ask a software developer the question 'What are some example uses of semiconductors?', they'll probably mention 'silicon chips', like the ones found in processors or graphics cards. Indeed, this is probably the answer that I would have given just a couple years ago, but I have since become enlightened as to the true power of semiconductors.
A Guide to Recording 660FPS Video On A $6 Raspberry Pi Camera
2019-08-01 - By Robert Elder This article will discuss the setup steps that are required for recording videos at high frame rates on cheap Raspberry Pi cameras. Frame rates up to 660FPS on the V1 camera and up to 1007 on the V2 camera can be achieved. Filming at these extremely high frame rates on a Raspberry Pi is much more challenging and involves more work than typical point and shoot photography.
With a focus on travel, AirAsia's super app concept builds on existing strengths
AirAsia, one of the world’s largest budget airlines, is on a mission to build a regional super app. While it follows in the footsteps of titans like WeChat in China and Gojek in Southeast Asia, AirAsia could blaze a path for travel and other industries not endemic to the mobile space. Companies looking to expand their mobile business should take lessons from its journey, wherever its final destination may be.
How To Make A CPU - A Simple Picture Based Explanation
2021-11-09 - By Robert Elder The purpose of this article is to explain how to make a CPU out of rocks and sand as fast as possible without using too many words. As the world of proprietary hardware and software crushes in around us, we risk losing the ability to make things for ourselves as individuals. It is for this reason that I felt compelled to learn how one could hypothetically make their own integrated circuits by themself.
No, John C. Calhoun Didn’t Invent the Filibuster
In his classic book The Historian’s Craft, the historian Marc Bloch warned his fellow historians against worshipping the “idol of origins,” the idea that current events could be traced back to singular, pure, or first causes in the past that promised to lay bare the true nature of things in the present. I have thought of Bloch’s warning every time I read an op-ed confidently proclaiming, as one recent piece in the New York Review of Books put it, that “the filibuster was invented by John C.

The ambitious heretic who would be president
“CALHOUN: AMERICAN HERETIC” By Robert Elder Basic Books ($35) “Rank democracy,” Republican Senator Mike Lee of Utah controversially proclaimed last year, isn’t the “objective” of the American experiment, Rather, he continued, “liberty, peace, and prosperity are.” This anti-democratic impulse has a long history in American politics, and even a theoretical lineage, as Robert Elder shows in “Calhoun: American Heretic,” his expansive new biography of South Carolina politician John Calhoun.
Beyond Spider-Man: Steve Ditko’s Letters Provide Insight into an Enigmatic Creator
Steve Ditko (far left) in US Army with two unidentified soldiers, circa 1945. ©Ditko Estate When Steve Ditko died in 2018, his family had difficulty opening his office door because it was blocked by months of unopened correspondence. Fan letters and packages had piled up in an accidental monument to the enigmatic creator and co-creator of Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, the Creeper and other beloved characters.
Machiavelli: His Life and Times
Thanks to the invidious reputation of his most famous work, The Prince, Niccolo` Machiavelli exerts a unique hold over the popular imagination. But was Machiavelli as sinister as he is often thought to be? Might he not have been an infinitely more sympathetic figure, prone to political missteps, professional failures, and personal dramas?

'Kraven's Last Hunt' |
In hindsight, it was so obvious. And I missed it completely. When I published my book Hemingway in Comics late last year, I was reaching out to my favorite writers to ask for cover blurbs—among them J. M. DeMatteis (Moonshadow, The Amazing Spider-Man). I'd spent years documenting Ernest Hemingway's 120-plus appearances in comics alongside Wolverine, Mickey Mouse, Superman—and exploring the Nobel-winner's cultural impact.
February Texas Books Preview
February is not supposed to blow in like a lion—that’s March; but hopefully the January snow will stop the Rolling Plains from blowing away. Meanwhile, also blowing in on the February winds of love (sorry!) is a big, long list of new Texas books.

The services hole in Gojek’s Thailand ambitions
Home Search Newsletters Suddenly, Indonesian ride-hailing leader Gojek is all over Bangkok. Billboards, public transport stations, and even YouTube, Facebook and beyond. The company has dominated online and offline advertising space across Thailand’s capital since September, when it rebranded its local operations from the Thai-only “GET” to the internationally-familiar “Gojek”.
What is your favorite engine sound?
Picture the sleepy hamlet of Amelia Island, Florida, early on a Sunday morning. Spanish moss drapes the trees. A cool blanket of dew covers the ground. And here I am, driving to the judges’ breakfast for the day’s concours. I’m trailing a Ferrari F40–wing, scoops, the whole nine yards. While I’ve never really been an F40 guy, I have to admit that as the Ferrari ran through its gears, the symphony produced under that morning light was pretty damned intoxicating.
SPJ Delegates Pass New Sponsorship Policy Resolution
Sometimes, common sense wins. On Saturday, Sept. 12, the SPJ delegates voted overwhelmingly to “adopt the Sponsorship Task Force report…and direct the board of directors to enact the proposed Sponsorship Policy as recommended.” What does that mean? The full sponsorship policy is below, but it directs SPJ to reject money from entities that attack journalists, spread misinformation and undermine a free press. See the full policy below.
A vote for the soul of SPJ
One of the most important votes in the history of the Society of Professional Journalists is coming up on Saturday, Sept. 12. It is a vote, essentially, for the soul of SPJ and our core values. At the heart of the matter: Will the SPJ and its partners continue to take money from sources that attack journalists or undermine a free press? Or, will we follow our own Code of Ethics and industry guidelines championed by our sister organizations, such as the Online News Association (ONA)?
"Hemingway in Comics" |
I blame The Comics Journal. And you, its readers. What started out as a pop culture detour turned into a rabbit hole, as I was doing research for my 2016 book Hidden Hemingway. As part of that project, I began collecting Hemingway references in pop culture, including a growing list of appearances in comic books. That research turned into several articles for The Comics Journal and reader feedback helped me find even more Hemingway guest spots in comics.
