Identification of substrates of the human mitochondrial ClpXP protease and its implications for Perrault syndrome
Abstract The ClpXP ATP-dependent unfoldase-protease complex plays important roles in maintaining protein homeostasis in the mitochondria. Pathogenic variants of CLPP have been identified in patients with Perrault syndrome type 3 (PRLTS3), a rare recessive mitochondrial disease characterized by sensorineural hearing loss, ovarian dysfunction, and neurological abnormalities. However, it remains unclear how these ClpP variants cause this disease.

Targeting oncogenic FLT3 uncovers a ferroptosis vulnerability through selenocysteine recoding in acute myeloid leukaemia
Abstract Ferroptosis, an iron-dependent form of cell death driven by lipid peroxidation, has emerged as a potential therapeutic strategy for therapy-resistant cancers. Glutathione peroxidase 4 and the selenoprotein biosynthesis pathway essential for its translation are key regulators of ferroptosis but lack effective therapeutic targeting.
Editorial Introduction to the 40th Anniversary Special Issue
The August 1986 issue of the Oxford Bulletin of Economics and Statistics was a special issue containing papers dealing with the then newly developing field of cointegration. Hendry [1] wrote the editorial introduction, presenting the argument that the consequences of assuming non-stationarity of time series in modelling, for the statistical properties of estimators and tests, were profound.

Extended family relationships among older African American, Black Caribbean, and White Adults
Objectives This article examines a conceptual model of receiving and providing social support among older African Americans, Black Caribbean, and non-Latino Whites. Background Supportive exchanges are an important aspect of family relationships. This is especially true among older adults. Despite their importance, the mechanisms of extended family support are largely neglected in the research literature.
Inferring internal states across mice and monkeys using facial features - Nature Communications
Abstract Animal behaviour is shaped to a large degree by internal cognitive states, but it is unknown whether these states are similar across species. To address this question, here we develop a virtual reality setup in which male mice and macaques engage in the same naturalistic visual foraging task. We exploit the richness of a wide range of facial features extracted from video recordings during the task, to train a Markov-Switching Linear Regression (MSLR).

Interleukin-1β induces and accelerates human endometrial stromal cell senescence and impairs decidualization via the c-Jun N-terminal kinase pathway - Cell Death Discovery
Abstract As the mean age of first-time mothers increases in the industrialized world, inquiries into causes of human reproductive senescence have followed. Rates of ovulatory dysfunction and oocyte aneuploidy parallel chronological age, but poor reproductive outcomes in women older than 35 years are also attributed to endometrial senescence.
Systematic analysis of NDUFAF6 in complex I assembly and mitochondrial disease - Nature Metabolism
Abstract Isolated complex I (CI) deficiencies are a major cause of primary mitochondrial disease. A substantial proportion of CI deficiencies are believed to arise from defects in CI assembly factors (CIAFs) that are not part of the CI holoenzyme. The biochemistry of these CIAFs is poorly defined, making their role in CI assembly unclear, and confounding interpretation of potential disease-causing genetic variants.

Genetic testing for mitochondrial disease: the United Kingdom best practice guidelines - European Journal of Human Genetics
Abstract Primary mitochondrial disease describes a diverse group of neuro-metabolic disorders characterised by impaired oxidative phosphorylation. Diagnosis is challenging; >350 genes, both nuclear and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) encoded, are known to cause mitochondrial disease, leading to all possible inheritance patterns and further complicated by heteroplasmy of the multicopy mitochondrial genome.
Delineating selective vulnerability of inhibitory interneurons in Alpers' syndrome
Key points Intractable epilepsy with occipital focus is a major presenting feature of Alpers' syndrome, but the aetiological factors underlying this focus in the primary visual cortex are not known. Parvalbumin-positive(+) interneurons are typically fast-spiking inhibitory interneurons which have high metabolic demands and are, thus, particularly vulnerable to mitochondrial dysfunction.
Defining mitochondrial protein functions through deep multiomic profiling - Nature
Abstract Mitochondria are epicentres of eukaryotic metabolism and bioenergetics. Pioneering efforts in recent decades have established the core protein componentry of these organelles1 and have linked their dysfunction to more than 150 distinct disorders2,3. Still, hundreds of mitochondrial proteins lack clear functions4, and the underlying genetic basis for approximately 40% of mitochondrial disorders remains unresolved5.

Cancer can't stop Guardsmen from deploying
Cassandra Cridland has known her husband, Sgt. 1st Class Wayne Cridland, since junior high. “The thing to know about my husband is he’s just committed to life,” she said. “Whatever he’s doing in the moment, he’s fully committed to that. If he says he’s going to conquer something, you might as well stand out of his way. He’s going to do exactly that. Whether it’s cancer, going on a deployment or mowing the yard.” Cridland was diagnosed with Stage 4A squamous cell carcinoma in February 2009.
Overdispersion in COVID-19 increases the effectiveness of limiting nonrepetitive contacts for transmission control
Significance Evidence indicates that superspreading plays a dominant role in COVID-19 transmission, so that a small fraction of infected people causes a large proportion of new COVID-19 cases. We developed an agent-based model that simulates a superspreading disease moving through a society with networks of both repeated contacts and nonrepeated, random contacts.
Metals and Metalloids in Feathers of Neotropic Cormorants (Phalacrocorax brasilianus) Nesting in Lake Livingston and Richland Creek, Texas, USA

Mean concentrations of Al, As, Cr, Cu, Fe, Pb, Sb, and Se were not significantly different in breast feathers of cormorants from the two locations or between sexes.
The molecular pathology of pathogenic mitochondrial tRNA variants
Abstract Mitochondrial diseases are clinically and genetically heterogeneous disorders, caused by pathogenic variants in either the nuclear or mitochondrial genome. This heterogeneity is particularly striking for disease caused by variants in mitochondrial DNA‐encoded tRNA (mt‐tRNA) genes, posing challenges for both the treatment of patients and understanding the molecular pathology.
Unlocking the potential of the formate pathway in the photo-assisted Sabatier reaction
Abstract Although solar irradiation has demonstrated beneficial synergy for catalytic CO2 hydrogenation, it has long been debated as to whether the observed photo-assisted catalytic enhancement has a photo-activation component or is driven solely by the heating effect. Here, we confirm that surface adsorbates play a critical role in photo-assisted CO2 activation. We isolate the rate-determining intermediate species in the photo-assisted Sabatier reaction by in situ isotopic spectroscopy.
Reversible EMT and MET mediate amnion remodeling during pregnancy and labor
Remodeling the amnion During pregnancy, the amniotic membrane undergoes growth, repair, and remodeling processes that depend on epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and the reverse, MET. The membrane normally weakens just before parturition; aberrant weakening can lead to premature rupture. Richardson et al. found that amnions from mice and human term births exhibited increased EMT compared to amnions before the onset of labor and that oxidative stress stimulated EMT in preterm amnions.

Treating opioid‐induced constipation in patients taking other medications: Avoiding CYP450 drug interactions
Summary What is known and objective When patients fail other treatment regimens and still suffer from pain sufficiently severe, opioid analgesics are appropriate and required. Unfortunately, constipation is a common adverse effect of opioids. Opioid‐induced constipation (OIC) can be treated with one of the new peripherally acting µ‐opioid receptor antagonist (PAMORA) agents.
Effect of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine introduction on childhood pneumonia mortality in Brazil: a retrospective observational study
Summary Background Understanding the real-world effect of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) on pneumonia mortality is crucial because of the expectation that increased PCV use will substantially reduce the burden of pneumonia deaths in children younger than 5 years. However, few post-vaccine introduction studies have estimated the benefits of PCV use on childhood mortality and results have been inconsistent.
The investigation and management of metabolic myopathies
Metabolic myopathies (MM) are rare inherited primary muscle disorders that are mainly due to abnormalities of muscle energy metabolism resulting in skeletal muscle dysfunction. These diseases include disorders of fatty acid oxidation, glyco(geno)lytic muscle disorders and mitochondrial respiratory chain (MRC) disease.
Clinical research networks are key to accurate and timely assessment of pandemic clinical severity
To be most useful, information about clinical severity should be available soon after a new pandemic threat emerges, whether the threat is from influenza or another emerging virus. One measure of severity is the risk of death among cases, variably defined as people presenting for care, people with symptoms, or people infected (with or without symptoms). Another measure is the expected demand for health care—hospital space, and availability of respirators and adequate beds in intensive care units.

Antioxidant and Associated Capacities of Camu Camu (Myrciaria dubia): A Systematic Review
An aging population in the United States presents important challenges for patients and physicians. The presence of inflammation can contribute to an accelerated aging process, the increasing presence of comorbidities, oxidative stress, and an increased prevalence of chronic pain. As patient-centered care is embracing a multimodal, integrative approach to the management of disease, patients and physicians are increasingly looking to the potential contribution of natural products.
A novel histochemistry assay to assess and quantify focal cytochrome c oxidase deficiency
Defects in the respiratory chain, interfering with energy production in the cell, are major underlying causes of mitochondrial diseases. In spite of this, the surprising variety of clinical symptoms, disparity between ages of onset, as well as the involvement of mitochondrial impairment in ageing and age‐related diseases continue to challenge our understanding of the pathogenic processes. This complexity can be in part attributed to the unique metabolic needs of organs or of various cell types.
