Earlier he was advisor to the Turkey Assessment Group in the European Parliament and Senior Fellow at the Gatestone Institute in New York. Currently, he is an international advisor at RIEAS (Research Institute for European and American Studies) in Athens.

On May 24 Özgür Özel, the elected leader of Turkey’s secular opposition CHP (Republican People’s Party), was evicted from the party’s headquarters by riot police. Now the captains and the kings have departed, it is possible to have a clearer picture of what has been achieved at the NATO summit in Ankara. It was ably stage managed by secretary-general Mark Rutte, “the ultimate marriage counselor”.

On June 3, 2026, Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that President Donald Trump will attend the July 7–8, 2026, North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit in Ankara. Rubio signaled “significant changes” loom for the defense alliance. No doubt the United States will reduce its commitment to Europe. Turkey, with NATO’s second-largest army, will step up to fill the gap.
