Police are warning tourists and would-be photographers that snapping an Instagram-worthy picture of Taranaki Maunga on a rural road near New Plymouth isn't worth the risk of losing your life. Senior Sergeant Matt Prendergast said motorists have reported almost hitting people who have stopped on Kent Road - some were even laying down on the road - to get photos of Taranaki Maunga.

But, two years on, the 39-year-old is back in the forests promoting tracks suitable for adaptive mountain bikes. Thomas Goodwin was eight days into a 10-day trip with mates in Tasmania when the unimaginable happened.

Australian company asks to explore Taranaki Basin for oil and gas

A Perth-based company has made an application to explore for oil and gas in the Taranaki Basin. Taranaki Energy - a wholly owned subsidiary of Perth-based Pancontinental Energy - has applied for a permit targeting frontier deepwater off the coast of Taranaki. It is the fifth permit application to prospect for hydrocarbons in New Zealand waters since the removal of the exploration ban.
