Rare Record of Albinism in a New Zealand Fur Seal (Arctocephalus forsteri) Pup With Observations Through the Weaning Period

|
By Alasdair A. Hall, Robyn Grant, Jody Weir
| Wiley Online Library Verified
1 Introduction Colour of the hair, skin and eyes in mammals is controlled by the amount of melanin production (Lamoreux et al. 2010; Lin and Fisher 2007), and anomalies in the typical colour for a given species can result from heritable genetic mutations (Shihlomule et al. 2024). In mammals, genetic mutations that can induce anomalous pigmentation are classified into albinism, leucism, melanism and piebald, each of which differs in its impacts (Acevedo and Aguayo 2008; Shihlomule et al. 2024).

Can we study whisker movements to gain insights into the natural sensory behaviours of mammals?

|
By Robyn Grant
| Wiley Online Library Verified
Whiskers, or vibrissae, are present across mammals, in most species, from marsupials to primates (Ahl, 1986; Muchlinski et al., 2020). They are specialised vibrotactile sensors, which are mainly used to guide locomotion and foraging by touch (Grant & Goss, 2022). Some species can also use their whisker follicles to sense wind (Mugnaini et al., 2023), water movements (Hanke et al., 2010; Krüger et al., 2018) and even electromagnetic fields (Czech-Damal et al., 2012).

Determining modulus of elasticity using finite element analysis and non‐destructive testing: Are aquatic animal whiskers stiffer?

1 INTRODUCTION Understanding and measuring the stiffness of biological materials gives important insights into their evolution and mechanical properties. How stiff a biological structure is, its flexural rigidity (e.g., EI), is dependent on two things: (i) the cross-sectional shape (or second moment of area, I); and (ii) the material's resistance to deformation (or modulus of elasticity, E).
