What was your first job as a journalist?

I interviewed Haitian filmmaker Raoul Peck about his film Lumumba, which was set to air on HBO.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

No, but I'd like to.

How is social media changing news?

For better or worse, news is more interactive now, more opinionated, and consumed and produced much more quickly.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Does Jessica Fletcher qualify? She solved murders in a journalistic fashion.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

It's trying to tell a story honestly and the best way you know how.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Google Docs.

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter.

Idris Elba.

Why did you become a journalist?

I like to write.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

We didn't have a newspaper, but I founded my high school's literary magazine.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I'm working on a book about the Dark Room Collective. It's been challenging interviewing and researching writers but it's been rewarding too.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Rejection isn't the end of the world. Keep trying.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Any time. I don't sleep.
