Artificial Intelligence, Genuine Nightmares
I distinctly remember the moment I was first intrigued by the possibilities of AI Art. On December 13th, 2021 I was scrolling through Twitter and breaking up the endless parade of apocalyptic news stories, vicious wisecracks and obscure movie trivia fighting for space on my feed was a puzzling and bizarre comic-grotesquerie “Elon Musk Dying in Space,” created by one @wagface.
Underrated/Overlooked: Rodney Ascher on Nicolas Winding Refn’s Too Old to Die Young
Last year saw the debut of a 10-episode, 13-hour season of prestige television, created by a team of celebrated filmmakers working at the height of their powers with what can only be imagined was absolute creative freedom and a massive budget, and it was promptly released straight to oblivion. It would have been impossible for me to find if I hadn’t known to search for it by name, painstakingly typing in “T-o-o-o-l-d-t-o-d-i-e-y-o-u-” But it was better that way.

The Nightmare: Trailer "Right Behind Me"
Hmm…it looks like things are taking a while to load. Try again?
Room 237 (2012) - IMDb
Just got done watching it. My initial reaction: "Wow. These people are nuts." Don't get me wrong - this is a fun watch as long as you don't take any of it too seriously. I know the film pretty well, but these "analysts" go out of their way to ignore the obvious in order to drive on to their wacky conclusions. Thanks to the infinite paranoia pool that we call the Internet, the mythology about The Shining is outstripping the history of the film itself.
