RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Wednesday is now a First Alert Weather Day as we are anticipating some scattered strong to potentially a few severe storms to develop during the afternoon and evening time frame. The window of opportunity to see storms is between 2pm and 9pm. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has recently placed much of the 12 On Your Side viewing area under a level 2 out of 5 risk for severe storms.

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - We received an update on the drought monitor Thursday morning (4/9/2026) and it is not looking good across the Commonwealth of Virginia. 83% of the state is now under some level of drought with many areas now in Severe drought conditions. This includes areas from the Northern Neck back to the west including Caroline county, much of Hanover county and much of the western Piedmont. Much of the state of Virginia is now in either moderate or severe drought.

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Monday, March 16 is a First Alert Weather Day for severe storms and possible tornados. You may hear about Severe Thunderstorms or Tornado Watches and Warnings. We have found that people often get confused about the difference between a WATCH and a WARNING. A WATCH means that conditions in the atmosphere are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms and/or tornadoes.
