Last week's meeting of the Kerrville City Council began with the official swearing-in of new Kerrville Police Chief Jerel Haley. Haley has served as assistant police chief since 2023 and has a distinguished career in law enforcement dating back more than three decades. Haley came to Kerrville from his previous post in California.

Officers of the Tivy Mountain Historic Black Cemetery Association signed the official paperwork late last week conveying ownership of the cemetery from the City of Kerrville to the association. Earlier this year, the nonprofit was created to assume the responsibility of restoring the more than century-old cemetery located on Cypress Creek Road, which is the resting place of many of the Black families who lived in Kerrville and Kerr County in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Kerrville Pets Alive will sponsor a Remembrance Ceremony for the animals lost in last July's flood at 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 3, at the Pets Alive safe house, 2102 Memorial Blvd., adjacent to the Schreiner University campus. "We had hundreds of pets, livestock, and even pet turtles reported missing during the flood. Our property became a hub for pet reunification and recovery. This was a tragic event for so many families and also for those who lost beloved animal companions.
