Mercury pollution in marine mammals is increasing, new study finds
In 2017, a new global treaty was meant to bring mercury pollution under control. But three decades of data from UK harbor porpoises show mercury is still increasing, and is linked to a higher risk of dying from infectious disease. When the Minamata convention came into force eight years ago, it was hailed as a turning point. The global treaty on mercury commits countries to reducing mercury from coal-fired power plants, industry and products, like batteries and dental fillings.

7 hours ago The Trump administration has announced new oil and gas drilling in the waters off California and Florida for the first time in decades. This announcement marks a further step in President Donald Trump’s effort to increase US energy independence and create jobs in the industry. It comes as the US petroleum industry, despite dealing with low crude prices, has been pushing for access to more offshore drilling areas.

Oil pollution in North Sea is 'grossly underestimated,' suggests new report
Growing up in Aberdeen, Scotland, the shadow of the Piper Alpha disaster loomed large over our community. The tragic explosion of the oil rig platform in 1988 claimed the lives of 167 people. Back then, I was blissfully unaware of the ecological ramifications of that disaster. But the spill of 670 tons of oil wreaked havoc on marine life and had a lasting impact on the marine environment that I love to explore.

Cost of living hardest for those on income support
The cost of living crisis is really biting in Australia, so much so that the Government has called ministers to Canberra to discuss the issue before Parliament sits this year. This action contrasts with the news that real wages are rising and underlines the extent of the crisis that lowering inflation is still a long way from providing any real relief. Says Angie Adamson on X: ‘I have been using the same email list to shop from all through COVID.
Spatiotemporal Trends Spanning Three Decades Show Toxic Levels of Chemical Contaminants in Marine Mammals
Since the 1920s, the increasing global use of thousands of synthetic chemicals in pest and disease control, crop production, and industry has led to unforeseen pervasive and widespread environmental contamination by persistent organic pollutants (POPs).
A matter of discretion: politicians make their own rules on funding
What lessons have been learnt in the wake of the funding rorts that have embroiled the Morrison government? Rosie Williams finds that the problem is worse than the most pessimistic assumptions. More than a third of the 1000 or so Commonwealth Grant programs established since 2018 have been awarded by ministerial discretion alone, more than $7 billion worth. I have been creating research tools which allow the public to explore government spending for the past decade at AusGov.info.

A Brief Inquiry into Self-Identification
The concept of self-identification can seem unusual to those unfamiliar with the concept, and those unfamiliar with the people that would use self-identification. Put simply, self-identification is the idea that trans people would be able to self-determine how they are legally identified. Seems reasonable. Cisgender people get the luxury of not needing to self-identify, because they do not have any grievances with how they’ve been assigned.
Government Moves Charity Transparency In The Wrong Direction
Financial transparency in Australia's charity sector has a surprisingly short history. It was only in 2012 that the outgoing Labor government established a dedicated charity regulator, the Australian Charities and Not-for-Profit Commission which requires charities to report their finances and operations for public scrutiny on an annual basis.

Over 47 thousand charities must report to the Australian Charities & Not-for-profit Commission each year. However the financial information they are required to provide varies radically depending on their size and whether reports as a 'Group Reporter' or self-assesses as a 'Basic Religious Charity'.
