1 INTRODUCTION The collective migration of cranial neural crest cells (CNCCs) is a crucial process in vertebrate development that leads to the formation of bone, cartilage, and connective tissues of the face.1, 2 During embryogenesis, CNCCs emerge from the hindbrain (rhombomere [r] segments r1–7) and migrate dorsolaterally in discrete streams towards the branchial arches (ba1–4), where subsequent cell proliferation and patterning occur.

Abstract In vertebrate embryogenesis, cranial neural crest cells (CNCCs) migrate along discrete pathways. Analyses in the chick have identified key molecular candidates for the confinement of CNCC migration to stereotypical pathways as Colec12, Trail, and Dan. The effects of these factors on CNCCs in vitro are known, but how they confine migration to discrete streams in vivo remains poorly-understood.
