Jersey City Mayor James Solomon has unveiled his 2026 budget proposal — a roughly $886.5 million plan that pairs a 15.5% increase to the city’s property tax rate with $58 million in spending cuts. The plan, released after 11 p.m. Friday, seeks to close a $255 million deficit Solomon blames on former Mayor Steve Fulop. The budget comes just over a week after the city council rejected a 15% property tax hike.

One man killed, two people injured in Harlem shooting, NYPD says

A man was killed and two other people were wounded in a Harlem shooting Friday night, police said. Officers responded to reports of gunfire on Malcolm X Boulevard, just two blocks north of Central Park, at around 10:20 p.m. When they arrived, NYPD officials said they found three people had been shot. A 35-year-old man who had been shot in the head was taken to Mount Sinai Morningside, where he was pronounced dead.

A line of thunderstorms tore through the New York area Friday evening, downing trees, knocking out power and delivering wind gusts up to 71 miles per hour — and the region could see a repeat Saturday evening, just as millions gather to celebrate the Fourth of July, according to the National Weather Service. The storms moved fast enough to spare the metro area of serious flooding, according to meteorologist Alexa Maines.
