Unexpected Fun Season Ends In OT Defeat
It was a season with no expectations heading into it, unless of course you count the expectation of being a lottery team. The over/under for the Pittsburgh Penguins standings points set by Vegas was right around 74.5. The team was supposed to be bad at hockey and borderline unwatchable. What unfolded was anything but. The Penguins put together one of the more fun seasons they’ve had in a while. Not only did they shatter the preseason prognostications.
Penguins Can’t Get Out Of Their Own Way
After a very fun and unexpected regular season the Pittsburgh Penguins find themselves up against it less than a week after their first round series against the Philadelphia Flyers began. Pittsburgh has lost the first three games of the series and are on the brink of elimination. This series has been a perfect storm of variables coming together leading to the Flyers winning handily. The Penguins headed into the playoffs resting players and not playing well.
No Sidney Crosby, No Problem
It has been a while since the Pittsburgh Penguins were in game action. All the way back on February 5th they defeated the Buffalo Sabres by a score of 5-2. It feels like forever ago. Coming back from the Olympic break Pittsburgh has a new look. They, of course, will be without Sidney Crosby for the next month due to the injury he sustained against Czechia in the quarterfinals. Additionally, the Penguins traded Brett Kulak to the Colorado Avalanche for Sam Girard.
Penguins Honor 2016 Team with 6-5 Victory
With yesterday’s 6-5 victory the Pittsburgh Penguins now hold the longest current winning streak in the NHL at six. They have two games in hand on the New York Islanders while holding a two point standings lead on them for second in the division. Per Moneypuck the Penguins are now the sixth likeliest team to make the playoffs at 89%. Pittsburgh now has a 17 game stretch where they’ve bookended two separate six game winning streaks. This while taking 28 out of a possible 34 points.
Defensive Trade Targets For Penguins
It has been a really interesting year for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Many of the preseason prognostications had them missing the playoffs and finishing in the lower third of the league. I thought the general consensus was low on the team, but at the same time I didn’t foresee them holding down second place in the Metropolitan Division on January 29th. Due to the playoffs being a legitimate outcome for the Penguins this has obviously thrown a mild curve ball at Kyle Dubas.
Crosby Does It Again To The Flyers
Losing Erik Karlsson for multiple weeks is going to put strain on the Pittsburgh Penguins. It comes at a time where the Eastern Conference playoff race has only three teams not within six points of a playoff spot. Through two games, the Penguins have earned three out of a possible four points sans Karlsson. They dropped an exciting 2-1 game to the Tampa Bay Lightning in a shootout on Tuesday.
Penguins Offense Disappeared This Weekend
The Pittsburgh Penguins had good vibes heading into their slate of weekend games against the Calgary Flames and Boston Bruins. The team had won six straight and both of those opponents are beatable, yet neither were defeated. The Penguins finished the weekend with only one goal scored and lost both games. It was a 2-1 loss to Calgary and a 1-0 loss to the Bruins. Defensively, they did a nice job. Three goals against in two games is more than acceptable. Offensively, it was quite a letdown.
2026 Could Be The Year Of The Penguin
Is it the year of the Penguin? Some people are saying. After Thursday night’s 4-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils the Pittsburgh Penguins have now won six in a row, with the last four victories coming in the year 2026. This stretch of winning has planted the Penguins right back into the thick of the playoff race. They are currently holding down the first wild card spot with 51 standings points with 42 games played.
Evgeni Malkin On The Cusp Of Returning
There is finally some good news to share on the Evgeni Malkin front. Today, he practiced with the team in a full contact jersey. It marks one of the final steps before being cleared for game action. The Pittsburgh Penguins don’t play until Thursday so he will have another day to practice. The expectation is that he will be ready to play on Thursday night against the New Jersey Devils. Malkin has missed 14 games with an upper-body injury.
Make It Five In A Row For The Penguins
On Sunday the skate was finally on the other foot. Instead, of the Pittsburgh Penguins being on the wrong end of blowing a third period lead late, it was the Columbus Blue Jackets. Rickard Rakell scored with 14 seconds left in the third period and Sidney Crosby closed things out in overtime for the 5-4 victory. Columbus had previously beaten the Buffalo Sabres 5-1 to put an end to the Sabres impressive ten game winnings streak.
Penguins Take Chance On Former 1st Rounder
The holiday roster freeze is officially over and the Pittsburgh Penguins haven’t wasted much time in making use of the open window. They have completed a trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets for forward Yegor Chinakhov.
Penguins Squander Another Point Late
On Sunday the Pittsburgh Penguins wrapped up their three-game road swing with a 3-2 loss to the Dallas Stars which kept with the common themes of the season. The team continues to impress and overperform based on preseason expectations. They took five of six standings points against the Philadelphia Flyers, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Dallas Stars. They also continue to be wretched in overtime and shootout scenarios. It is the sixth time they have conceded the extra point.
Jarry and Malkin Electric In Tampa
Thursday night’s game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Lightning lacked nothing for excitement or mild controversy. The Penguins raced out to a 3-0 lead only to do what they’ve done multiple times this year, blow it. Tampa Bay ultimately stormed back into the game tying things up in the third period. It was the kind of thing that seemed inevitable.
The Oilers Desperation And Tristan Jarry
It wasn’t too long ago that the idea of the Pittsburgh Penguins trading away Tristan Jarry (specifically, his odious contract) was ludicrous. The team put him on waivers, no team claimed him, and he ended up playing in the AHL. He carried negative value around the league, thus the Penguins still having him to start the 2025-26 season. However, Jarry will now start to pique the interest of teams looking to change their goaltending situation.
A Swede First Victory For Murashov
It was a familiar script for the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday. They played with purpose and jumped out to a multi-goal lead early. The path these games have taken is that the other team will claw back and eventually steal standings points away from a Penguins team who couldn’t maintain their standard. Today, we got a different end. The Penguins saw it to the finish and were able to secure a 4-0 victory and get their first regulation win in ten days. They came out with a lot better energy.
Penguins Have Devil Of A Time In Shootouts
The Pittsburgh Penguins came into Saturday with a chance to pull into first place in the entire league. Their opponent was also attempting to do the same thing. The Devils and Penguins ultimately settled their low scoring affair in a shootout with New Jersey climbing atop the NHL standings winning the game 2-1. It was a really solid effort by the Penguins considering the lineup situation they find themselves in. Injuries have depleted their options on both forward and defense.
Penguins Power Play Capitalizes In Victory
How would the Pittsburgh Penguins follow up blowing a 3-0 lead against the Maple Leafs on Monday? By blowing another 3-0 lead, of course. This time, however, the Penguins were able to overcome their loose defensive work to beat the Capitals by a score of 5-3. The thing about the back to back blown 3-0 leads is that this is who the Penguins are. This was happening earlier in the season, too.
Silovs Steals A Point for Penguins
It was an entertaining game on Tuesday. There were twists and turns. However, the Pittsburgh Penguins found themselves on the wrong end of a 3-2 decision after losing to the Philadelphia Flyers in a shootout. The Flyers deserved to win the game and earn the two points. This was a game where the Penguins weren’t very good at even-strength and were also bad on the power play. Arturs Silovs was the only reason the Penguins were even in a position to steal the loser point.
Crosby Hits 1,700 Point Milestone
Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins hit all the right notes last night. They improved their season record to 7-2-1 and continue to be one of the surprise teams early on in the season. After scoring two goals in the first minute of the game they finished the period tied. They stuck with it and entered the third with a one-goal lead. Instead of the trailing St. Louis Blues climbing back into the game, the Penguins put up a third period three-spot to win 6-3.
Nobody Has More Penguins Points Than Sid
Things started sideways for the Pittsburgh Penguins as they gave up a goal on the first shot of the game for the first time this year. It took a little while for things to get going, but they took over the game in the second period and were victorious over the Vancouver Canucks by a score of 5-1.
Enough Is Enough - It’s Time to Stop the Fraud
Minnesotans have long prided themselves on looking out for our neighbors and lending a helping hand. This good nature of ours has long extended to Minnesota’s safety net programs. But these programs are based on a fundamental idea that we live in a high trust society—that our laws and institutions are built on the premise that those needing help will only take what they need, and those administering the help will be good stewards of our hard-earned tax dollars. Neither is happening.

Commentary: Chicago's abnormally dry winters make for a troubling trend
Historically, complaints about Chicago’s weather rarely focus on our lack of cold and snow, but a deeper understanding of current trends could change the conversation. On the heels of the hottest year ever recorded in Chicago, our region is now in the middle of a “mild to moderate” winter that has delivered just 50% of our average annual snowfall, according to the Midwest Regional Climate Center.

Swimmers Turn Into Chefs During Jimi Flowers Classic
There’s a close, but maybe not so close, competition going on between American Para swimmers. Bragging rights are on the line. And so is chocolate. The scene was not a pool but rather a cooking challenge held during last month’s national team camp at the United States Olympic & Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The U.S. swimmers team were split into two teams — red and blue — and they were brought into Team USA’s teaching kitchen to make a meal for three coaches.

Patty Cisneros Prevo’s New Book, ‘Tenacious,’ Brings New Light To Disability
Patty Cisneros Prevo wonders what it would have been like seeing someone who looked her in a book when she was 18 years old. “What kind of impact could that have had on my life at that time?” Cisneros Prevo said. At the time, she was a freshman in college and new to the disabled community, having been in a car crash that left her paralyzed. Cisneros Prevo did not see many people with disabilities in books.
Dentist chided for his golfing abilities in fundraiser
The community honored a dentist who’s been practicing 46 years with a 30-minute roast that mostly chided him for his overconfidence in his golfing abilities as a fundraiser for Freedom Fest Saturday. Dr. Larry McGary, known for his work as the dentist who took care of underprivileged kids, expressed pride in providing care to third-generation patients. Some patients he developed such a close relationship with, becoming part of their lives, including their weddings.
We don’t need school vouchers
Legislators representing both Clay Center and Junction City said they decided not to vote for the latest school vouchers proposal because of overwhelming opposition they heard from constituents on the topic. Educational Saving Accounts, which would have allocated to private schools a portion of the funds that public schools received, narrowly passed the Kansas House 64-61 in mid-March and died in the Kansas Senate 17 to 20 on April 7.

‘Mean Girls’ rises as a standout performance
The JCHS production of the high school version of ‘Mean Girls’ last weekend came together perfectly, with all those involved hitting their roles expertly in the best performance we’ve ever seen at the high school level. JCHS, of course, is known for having one of the best theater programs in the state under the direction of Jodie Riche, having performed a PG-13 version of a play in the fall titled ‘She Kills Monsters’ and ‘Anastasia’ last spring.

Rockshore Bosun Bobs RS400 Winter Series at Royal North of Ireland Yacht Club - Day 6 by Ryan Wilson 13 Dec 06:58 GMT After last week's last minute cancellation due the fierce chop caused by a low tide and a strong easterly, the forecast for this week looked much more appetising with most models showing 6-10 knots from the east, although with a bitter high of 3 degrees. Race 1 saw a General Recall, with a few regular culprits pushing the line a little too hard.
State Auditor Challenger's View: Minnesotans need auditor to protect heard-earned tax dollars
Over the last four years Minnesota has been plagued by some of the largest financial scandals in its history. The child and daycare fraud scandal was estimated at $72 million. The more recent child-food fraud scandal has been reported as high as $200 million. In the Twin Cities, the true costs of the delayed Southwest Light Rail project were hidden from the public. The project is now more than $1 billion over its original budget and seven years behind schedule.
Why teaching matters: the bigger picture
Pupils come and go. If you flick through the registers of classes from years gone by, it’s quite possible that some names ring only the most distant of bells; others, perhaps, you would swear blind you had never taught. But invariably they will remember you. ‘My first English teacher always put me down for not being able to spell, or not having good enough interpretations of texts,’ says Sally, a science teacher from Essex. ‘But the teacher I had for GCSE helped pick me up.

Utah Parents United turned me on to serious problem
I have recently learned that the group Utah Parents United has identified a serious problem occurring in our schools. Apparently, pornography is being made available to our children via the school libraries. Upon hearing this news, I researched the books that are under scrutiny. I was disgusted with what I saw, and I felt compelled to write this letter to The Tribune showing my solidarity with Utah Parents United.
The joys of teaching
Against the backdrop of bureaucracy and inspections, Ryan Wilson finds pockets of pleasure in the classroom, canteen and playground How come you’re a teacher? It’s a question I, and probably you too, have been asked many times. On the face of it, it’s not hard to see why someone might be puzzled. It’s hardly a role famed for enormous salaries, or glamour. Teenagers are a reliably tough crowd. And we all know about the endless reports and data and forms and box ticking.
The Best of Alternative Energy Sources For the Future
By Ryan Wilson Along with the nice new online casinos, alternative energy sources are getting more and more popular nowadays. Thanks to the rising cost of natural gas, coal, and oil and their negative impact on the environment, electric cars, solar-powered homes, and wind turbines are becoming increasingly important in daily life. Most countries would like to switch their reliance on these fuels onto renewable energy sources (like sun or wind).
Let That Be a Lesson
Review by Chris H, Reviewer Last updated on 29 Jul 2021 My Recommendation The highs and lows of a teaching career are brought vividly to life in this compelling and often amusing account of life at the chalk face from former teacher, Ryan Wilson. Although generally more wryly amusing than packed full of belly laughs, Wilson's book is nevertheless a good and anyone who has ever attempted a teaching career themselves should find plenty here to relate to.
How to Detoxify your Home: Part Two
Continuing on my DIY healthy home conversion, part two of the detoxification series is dedicated to the next common home contenders: mattresses and paint. National Record of Achievement: the biggest lie of our time?
If you were at school during the 1990s, the chances are you were told a colossal lie. It relates to an A4 burgundy leatherette folder. You’d be forgiven for mistaking it for a wine list from a downmarket Italian restaurant, but the gold letters emblazoned on the front confirm that is actually a National Record of Achievement (NRA). The idea was that the NRA would house all your certificates, for everything from A levels to the cycling-proficiency test you passed when you were 11.

Ken Hitchcock Is Returning With the ‘Winning Mentality’ He Left 16 Years Ago
In April, the Dallas Stars announced the hiring of Head Coach Ken Hitchcock for the second time in the organization’s history. Hitchcock is returned to the team in which he began his NHL coaching career back in 1996 and the only team he has ever led to a Stanley Cup Championship. Coincidentally, Hitchcock is also the only skipper in Stars’ history to ever win a Stanley Cup with the organization. Over his career, Hitchcock is 781-474-111 with 88 ties back in the 90’s added on.
Stick to sports? Nah, I'm an adult
You are probably expecting something written about today's preseason game against the St. Louis Blues. I mean Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Phil, Kessel, and Kris Letang will all be in the lineup. Letang was even awarded the assistant captain honor on a full-time basis. That's about as exciting as preseason hockey gets! However, It is impossible to ignore what is going on in the United States from a current events standpoint.
Jason Witten Sets the Standard for Collegiate Man of the Year Award
After a summer highlighted by news of shoplifting, looming suspensions and missing dogs, the latest news to come out of the Cowboys’ camp was refreshing. Inspiring, even. Jason Witten’s name will be attached to the new Collegiate Man of the Year award, the first honor of its kind. The award recognizes college football players who demonstrate exemplary leadership and character both on and off the field.
NFL vs NFLPA: Let The Battle Begin
If the official appeal put in by Ezekiel Elliott didn’t kick off things initially, you can guarantee things have started now. Earlier this morning the NFL released another statement regarding the case surrounding Elliott: Ezekiel’s father Stacey tweeted a few days ago that they were ready to fight and there would be additional evidence brought to light to prove his son’s innocence.
