Introduction Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an autosomal recessive condition that is caused by loss-of-function mutations in the CF transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene [1]. CFTR encodes a cAMP-dependent Cl− transporter, the correct functioning of which helps to maintain effective airway mucociliary clearance (MCC) [2]. In CF lung disease, a reduction in both the quality and quantity of CFTR causes airways dehydration, impaired MCC and mucus obstruction.
